Yellow Submarine Symbolism
Throughout literary history, color symbolism has played a prominent role in English literature; specifically, writers such as John Lennon and Paul McCartney to present day author, Michael Dorris, applied continental color symbolism it to their famous allegorical works Yellow Submarine and A Yellow Raft in Blue Water. Everyone needs a place of sanctuary and peace in this stressful world; the yellow submarine and the yellow raft exemplify that place of sanctuary that man continually seeks emphasized by the utilization of symbolism. Evidently, Yellow Submarine by the Beatles tells of a yellow submarine where one finds a safe haven and prosperity. Most don’t think twice as to why The Beatles made the submarine yellow; why not the blue submarine or the black submarine? Furthermore, The Beatles chose yellow because yellow has proven to be a color associated with joy, happiness, and leisure. Since the lyrical meaning in Yellow Submarine is about living in a place of “ease”, it is logical and clever to correlate the submarine with yellow.
