Yeast Lab Report
Yeast Lab Report Guidelines
1. Lab reports are to be computer-generated and double-spaced. All sections of the report must be written in paragraph form.
2. Do not use encyclopedias (Internet or otherwise), dictionaries ((Internet or otherwise), or personal web pages as sources for the report, this includes Wikipedia. You may use a textbook, lab manual, and/or article(s) in a published journal.
You can find journal articles by going to the library website: http://www.lib.clemson.edu/ and selecting “Find Articles”, then choose the letter B, and then the database BIOSIS or
BioOne, or choose the letter P and use PubMed (or if you have a database you would rather use, please feel free). If you are off campus when you do this, you will need to log into the system. Once you are there use key words to search for articles that will help you write your introduction; you should be more specific than just using the word “yeast”.
3. Everything that you write must be your own. Do not plagiarize any work; do not collaborate with other students to write any portion of the report or to construct graphs or tables, as this will constitute violation of the academic integrity policy. Note that the maximum penalty for violating the academic integrity policy is a zero for the course.
4. The report is due at the beginning of Lab 11 (Cell Reproduction), during the week of 11/10-
11/14. There will be a 5-point late penalty assessed if the report is not submitted at the beginning of lab. Further, there will be a 5-point penalty assessed for each day the report is late. The report is worth 25 points. E-mailed or faxed reports will not be accepted. You must have a paper copy of the report when you come to lab.
5. The report should be based solely on yeast cell viability at different glucose concentrations.
6. The report should include the following: title, abstract, introduction, methods & materials, results, and discussion.
7. The report format should be similar to that presented below, or to

Please the following information as a guideline for compiling the lab report. Only one lab report per group is required. You do not have to answer the questions listed during the actual dissection, but you should be familiar with what is being asked of you before beginning. The lab must be typed and divided into sections according to systems (Meaning each system will be individually labeled like you would label a section of any other lab (materials, methods etc). You may divide the labor among group members, but the work should be compiled as a single document before being turned in. The front page of the lab report should include the names of all group members as well as the date submitted. You do not need a separate title page. Note: If group members are working on sections individually please be consistent with margins (1 inch or less), line spacing (single or 1.5) font size (12pt or less) and font used throughout the document. The document should not look like it was pieced together randomly at the time of submission.…

Scientific name -Kingdom- Fungi, Phylum- Ascomycota Class- Ascomycetes Order- Saccharomycetaler, Family- Saccharomycetaceae, Genus- Saccharomyces, Species- Cervisiae

Description - Yeast is a unicellular organism that lacks chloroplasts. They are so small that it can 't be seen by the naked eye and they are so small that it would take 4000 of them lined up side by side to measure an inch.

Habitat - Yeast lives on and is nourished by dead or living plant or animal matter. The ideal conditions of yeast is high humidity and temperature, plus lots of food. In bad conditions though the yeast produces a second cell wall for protection and the yeast contents divides into four parts; the parts are called ascospores. Then when favorable conditions return the ascospores burst to reproduce. Yeast gets their food from simple sugars, such as prutrose and destrose. These sugars are found in grapes and other fruits. They abstract the sugars out of the fruit by breaking the fruit down to double sugars then breaking those down to simple sugars. In this process they produce alcohol and CO2.

Life cycle - Yeast reproduces by budding. This is where the adult yeast begins to swell on its surface. Then part of the parent begins to bud and a wall is formed between the parent and the new yeast. Then the new yeast may do one of two things. It may break away from the parent or it may stay attached to form a chain or a cluster. Budding is very quick. It takes about 20 minutes to produce new yeast.

Importance - Yeast is used in many different types of commercial uses. Some of them are in banking to get breads and cakes to rise, in beer production in Germany, and wine production.

Wine producers don 't use wild yeast because they have some unfavorable traits. So they kill off the wild yeast and use yeast that have been domesticated to the needs of the production process.

Bibliography - Stew Scherer "Yeast.com",…
