MCD 1013 – INTRODUCTION TO MASS COMMUNICATION
GROUP ASSIGNMENT (20%)
Choose TWO (2) news/articles from newspaper (strictly NO internet printouts!) of your choice (must be in English) and answer the question below;
Describe the functions of mass media as carried by the news/articles from the aspects of 1) Surveillance 2) Interpretation 3) Linkage 4) Transmission of values/socialization 5) Entertainment
Provide a brief definition for each function, explain how the functions are applied by the reporter or journalist in your chosen news/articles; support your answers by giving examples through observations from the news/articles. You must write on a minimum of THREE (3) of these functions. So please choose your news/articles wisely. Then, COMPARE two news/articles from those aspects. You need to respond to the above questions in one complete and continuous essay by giving examples from the text and support your analysis with references from your readings and findings. You may use heading and subheadings where appropriate. While you may use the Dominick textbook as your main reference, please use and include other references as well.
You MUST attach the chosen news/articles in your assignment. This can be done either by pasting or stapling, and submitting together with the written component of your assignment. Failure to do so will result in a penalty on your grading.
