Critical Response
Jay Asher's book 13 Reasons Why is entertaining. His story of Hannah Baker and her feelings is disturbing. The main theme is: 'Think before you act; you could be hurting someone without knowing it' makes me feel depressed. Asher's use of imagery on page 160, "Hannah always looked depressed. The smile on her face never reappeared," supports that theme because it shows that the way people acted really did have a negative effect on Hannah. The tone throughout the book is dark, but sometimes shifts to upsetting to make the reader feel downcast.

*Review
I would recommend this book to anyone in high school. It shows that you need to think before you speak. It also shows that you never know what people are going through, until you step into their shoes. Words and actions really do hurt people more than some may think. This book is excellent because it is extremely realistic and although it is fiction, things like this probably happen everyday.

Theme/Tone
*The theme of this book is that you could be truly hurting someone without knowing it. Also, you should think before you act. This is the theme of 13 Reasons Why because the people that made Hannah commit suicide, did not realize they were affecting her. They had no idea that she was having a hard time with life, and just needed someone there for her. Thinking before you act supports the theme because people at Hannah's high school would spit rude remarks at her that definitely did not boost her confidence level.
*The tone throughout the entire book is dark and depressing. Hannah is describing to each person that contributed to her death why they did, and making them feel guilty for it. The effects on most of them are horrible. They can't sleep knowing that they killed someone without knowing it. They are forced to live with that forever.
Figurative Language
Imagery: "Ice-cold droplets cling to my skin and I run my wet finger across my eyelids."
*This helped to make the book

    Mr. Falker's Trisha

I liked this book for multiple reasons. First, I enjoyed how this book was paced. The author could have spent less time on the students bullying Trisha and more time on Mr. Falker teaching her how to read. However, she chose not to which helps the reader really feel how Trisha feels when the students bully her and makes Mr. Falker’s actions so much more meaningful. Secondly, this book pushes readers to think about tough issues; in this book Trisha is being bullied. Students can think about how Trisha felt, and about Eric’s, the bully’s, actions to help them understand that bullying is not nice and is not ok to do to other people. Additionally, it shows that it is ok if you take longer to learn to read or solve problems in math, everyone can…

Jay Asher pronounced, “You can’t stop the future. You can’t rewind the past. The only way to learn the secret is to press play.” The novel “Thirteen Reasons Why,” written by Jay Asher is about a teenage boy named Clay Jensen who receives a set of tapes made by Hannah Baker. The tapes revealed Hannah’s list of thirteen reasons why she committed suicide. Nobody saw it coming, nor did anyone notice the signs of suicidal thoughts that Hannah portrayed. This novel continuously supports the idea of having this book as a mandatory reading for grade eights, because of the meaningful lessons that it provides.…

Although The Catcher in the Rye has been considered one of the top 100 Books of the Century by the French newspaper Le Monde (Savigneau), it is highly controversial and many people despise it. Several societies believe that the book leads the reader to psychological problems and misfits in society. Countless schools and libraries have banned the books during its first years of existence, however, it is considered one of the most important books of the century. The book has been the reason, or has been mentioned, in many murders, of people such as: John F. Kennedy, John Lennon, and the attempt of assassination of Ronald Reagan. The murderers had read The Catcher in the Rye before the events. When they were caught, or found, they had the book. The character, Holden Caulfield, in J.D. Salinger’s, The Catcher in the Rye, has many psychological problems and is an outcast in society, leading some people to follow his path and taking it to the extreme, by killing others.…

Throughout Jay Asher’s novel Thirteen Reasons Why, he has demonstrated to the reader how one’s inability to make rational decisions can lead to another individual’s suicide. Over the course of the novel, the reader follows the events in the life of the protagonist, Hannah Baker that have led to her tragic suicide. One can argue that secondary character, Alex Standall plays a significant role in the story, and in Hannah Baker’s suicide, as none of the events would have occurred had it not been for Alex’s list. To begin with, like Hannah Baker, Alex Standall is a new student at Crestmont high school. The two immediately become friends, alongside Jessica Davis. Arguably, Alex can be described as a cruel, sneaky boy, who is very close-minded. The reason why Alex is on Hannah’s list of people, who contributed to her suicide is because of a list he created in their freshman year. Alex’s “who’s hot/who’s not” list was supposed to be a way of getting back at his ex-girlfriend, Jessica Davis. Alex placed Hannah’s name for the “best ass in freshman year.” This shows that Alex will do anything to get revenge making him a very vengeful, impulsive decision maker. As Hannah states “Okay. I just looked over every name- every story- that completes these tapes. And guess what. Every single event documented here may never have happened had you, Alex not written my name on that list” (Asher Page 41). This clearly shows that Alex contributed to all that occurred in Hannah’s life. Hannah believes that if Alex was capable of seeing the impact of the list on her life, he would not have created the list and as a result none of the tragic events (including her suicide) would have occurred. Additionally, as Hannah Baker said herself “It gives people- some people- the go-ahead to treat you like nothing but that specific body part” (Asher Page 44). By putting her name on that…

I myself have learned a lot from this book even though it sounds more like a horror story, I have learned that you can be mature and grown up at the age of five. Not everyone lives there life to the fullest, when they should. Alice had her whole childhood taken from her and she jumped in front of a bullet to save a girl she didn’t even know, even though that was her ticket out. She didn’t want another childhood ruined because of her. She had a lot of time through the years to just sit and think about life and not once did she say “why me?” she was strong and took the beatings not because of fear but so her family wouldn’t suffer from a fiery death. I look back and try to make the best out of my days because you know I can eat whatever I want every day and I can leave my house and talk to people and I can have a life, Alice…

“You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life.” (Asher 108). After reading this passage immediately I interpreted this as the message or lesson of the novel. This is true because Hannah experienced this first hand. Everyone in this book had no idea that the things they did impacted Hannah so deeply. Every little things that someone did, no matter how harmless it may seem, can stick with someone and eat away at them. If the impact of our choices were immediate, we would think twice before we act. For instance, we would not think of placing our hand in the fire because of the burn and pain. But many of our choices do not have an immediate or obvious impact. As a result, we make choices without thinking too much of the consequences. By the time the full impact of our choice hits us in the future, it is too late for regrets. This quote explemlifies the true essence of the novel and why Hannah decided to take her life. Additional it portrays the message that one's every choice can make a powerful impact on someone's life.…

First of all, I really liked the idea of book: a girl explaining why she committed suicide to the people responsible for it. I think the chain of tapes, forcingly being sent from one person on the list to the next was a concept I found intriguing and allowed me to stay involved and crave more with each chapter.Just like Clay, i find myself wanting to know who was on the next tape and why.I loved Clay as a character and i really enjoyed the way he was written into the story. I felt like i was in his shoes a lot of the time, hearing the tapes through his ears and experiencing this journey alongside him. The suspense of each following tape was entertaining, i wanted to know which tape Clay would be featured and when his story was coming up, this gave me a sense of impatience. Each time a new character was introduced was a sigh of relief as it wasn’t Clay’s turn to be humiliated, i found myself wanting what was best for him but i also wanted to know how and why he was involved in the death of Hannah Baker. There’s something addictive about this book, I couldn’t stop reading it because I…

The book’s author, Jay Asher, is so likeable that the clever and inspiring comments he makes on his novel may convince you to read it without any knowledge of the plot. He is surprisingly and intriguingly humble, despite the fact that Thirteen Reasons Why was deemed a New York Times Weekly Best Seller and “Barnes and Noble’s Top Ten Best For Teens” (Awards Page, Jay Asher) and was Asher’s very first book.
