Written Assignment 1: Challenges in HRM
Daniel Granger
HRMN 300

Prof. Malfara

Main Purpose The main purpose of this article is to identify and inform the reader of the ever prevalent challenges faced by Human Relations Mangers, (HRM), around the globe in today’s new modern, global, business world. Many companies, and their senior leadership alike, still believe that an HR department really doesn’t produce anything and only costs the company a portion of its profits. Human Relations, (HR), departments can and should be much more productive than they have traditionally been. No longer do we have a typing pool next to the water cooler, and a part-time secretary down the hall to keep track of employee information and their stamp-clock time cards. HR departments are taking on duties that have previously belonged to supervisors, and play a vital part of any company that hopes to succeed in the future. Employee training, retention and compensation are all within the HR area of responsibility.

Key Questions The key questions the author is addressing are: What role will the HRM be forced to play in the future? Additionally, what kind of new skills will the HRM be required to master in order to maintain their competitiveness and productivity? The HRM will take on a new role in the company, instead of just being the personnel section over in the corner; the HR section will become mentors, trainers and guides, ensuring employee training and development while retaining the best and brightest of the bunch. The HR department will also be the focal point for employees when they have complaints, questions, concerns and need advice on how to handle delicate situations. It almost seems as though companies will be required to have their

own impartial legal office to be used by employer and employee alike. Keeping the company out of hot water with legal issues, while attracting and keeping employees satisfied are

Rossi Inc. is a diversified manufacturer of industrial products. In 2008, Rossi updated its asbestos litigation liability, including the costs of settlement payments and defense costs relating to currently pending claims and future claims projected to be filed against the Company through 2017 for losses incurred to date. Before 2008, the Company’s previous estimate was for claims projected to be filed through 2011. As part of the 2008 update to the asbestos litigation liability, Rossi engaged Thompson and Associates, a consulting firm, to serve as an external specialist to estimate the claims liability for December 31, 2008. As a result of the 2008 update and the external specialist claims estimate, the Company significantly increased its recorded asbestos litigation liability by $586 million, arriving at a total liability estimate of $1,055 million as of December 31, 2008. During 2009, additional payments against the reserve reduced the recorded liability to $962 million. As of December 31, 2009, the Company performed an analysis of the asbestos litigation reserve and determined that the asbestos litigation liability should remain at $962 million. In 2009, Rossi Inc.’s average cost per claim litigation increased from $29,000 in 2008, to $34,000 due to management’s aggressive approach. This resulted in Thompson concluding that the litigation liability account should have a carrying value of $1,124 Million instead of $962 Million. Management of Rossi Inc. thinks that there aggressive approach to litigation claims in 2009 and revised defense strategy will decrease litigation cost and defense cost in the future.…

Abstract: Cell membranes play an important role in regulating what goes in and out of the cell. Diffusion, the process of movement of substances across the cell membrane from higher concentrations to areas of lower concentration, plays an active role in the transport and the regulation through cellular membrane. Sometimes, there are cases when cells are placed in hypotonic solutions and substances will diffuse through the cell membrane too much and will result the cell to hemolysis, causing it to swell and rupture. In this lab, we observed and recorded the time it took for diffusion of a propanol series substance to diffuse through a mixture of ovine blood to the point when hemolysis occurred. It was hypothesized that size and polarity of the molecules of a substance do have an effect on the diffusion rate across the cell membrane and that substances containing the smaller and less polar molecules would have a faster diffusion rate than those molecules that are more polar. This experiment was tested by mixing the ovine blood with the propanol series test solutions (Propanol, Propanediol, and Propanetriol) and then placing the test tubes of the blood and substance mixture in front a slit lamp to observe and then record the time it took to view the wire through the transparent mixture. After the lab was completed, it resulted that Propanol took the shortest amount of time to diffuse through the cellular membrane while Propanetriol took the longest amount of time, leaving Propanediol in the middle of the two. These results occurred as Propanol contained the least amount of hydroxyl groups and was the smallest and least polar. Propanetriol was the most polar of the three substances, containing three hydroxyl groups causing the diffusion to be the slowest. These results occurred because as the molecule in a substance becomes larger and more polar, the longer it takes for that molecule to…

#2 – Construct a rhetorical examination of Grimké’s “Appeal to the Christian Women of the South.” What assumptions does she make about her audience, and how does she attempt to connect with them? How does Grimké answer the question, “Why appeal to women on this subject?” Why appeal specifically to Christian women of the south rather than men, or all people? Does limiting her targeted audience strengthen or weaken the overall impact of her argument? What does she want women to do? Finally, briefly summarize the four instructions she lays out for women.…

Without Christ, there can be no Christian discipleship. Christ is the teacher, friend, leader, guide, savior and Son of God who is the central part of Christian discipleship. 1 John 5:20 says, “And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” To be a disciple of Christ, one must acknowledge Jesus as the central part of discipleship.…

In the course carrying out their duties, every operating manager is, in essence, an HR manager. Before the development of an HR team, candidates must be aware of the responsibilities and duties of an HRM department, which entails: strategic management- effectiveness, planning and retention, equal employment opportunity (EEO,) – assuring compliance, diversity, and affirmative action, staffing- job recruitment, talent management and development-performance management, training and development , Total Reward: Compensation and Benefits-ensuring fair compensation and incentives, Risk Management and Workers Protection-employee protections, health and safety, Employee and Labor Relations-ensuring that all employees have rights and privacy. According to, Differentiation through People: How Can HR Move beyond Business Partner, “Our profession has the lead responsibility, working closely with our line and other colleagues, to design the policies and practices that elicit the discretionary behavior leading to sustainable success,” (Armstrong, 2005.) HR personnel are value assets to an organization culture and…

While there are those who may be uncomfortable with the idea that worship is a goal in making disciples, the goal of Christian education according to Mitchell is to make a disciple who worships Jesus. Mitchell points out that worship is more than just showing up at church on Sunday morning for an hour of corporate worship. He points out that worship according to John 4:19 -24 goes much deeper than just that time of corporate worship that we often think of as worship. He points out that worship involves the whole person, mind, body and soul. Anderson states that corporate worship is “an action of discipling and discipleship” and a “school for the Lord’s service.”…

Throughout high school, English was never my favorite subject. It seemed bland and dull to me and I thought that whatever career I chose would have more to do with mathematics and sciences. So when I enlisted into the U.S. Army and eventually achieved the rank of Sergeant, I discovered that writing was one of the most important factors of my everyday life. Now there are many different forms and memorandums that write on a weekly basis, but if I had to choose one that stands out above all others, it would be the DA Form 4856. It is otherwise known as the Developmental Counseling Form, which is without a doubt the most important writing assignment I complete every month.…

    Why We Hate Hr

The article Why We Hate HR by Keith Hammonds, deputy editor for Fast Company, discusses the ineffectiveness human resources have on a company. He very boldly argues that HRM’s striving to become involved in strategic business planning and to have “a seat at the table” are inhibited by the routine functions of HR and administrative expectations (Hammonds, 2005, p. 1). Hammonds’ article develops claims that lead up to his conclusion that HR is a wasted talent for a company to utilize to gain differentiation, competiveness, and value. The critiques Hammonds used to define human resources can be used to explore the potential value and capabilities HR has to offer a business and possibilities of a company gaining in the HR area of the work force.…

The theoretical development of HRM as a field since the early 1980s has focussed on its importance as a strategic area of management. One of the most influential presentations of the new field, that associated with the Harvard Business School proposed that HRM should be given a ‘General Managers’ perspective” (Beer et. al, 1986). In general the field has been presented as providing a break from tradition of personnel management by introducing the importance of a strategic link between HR activities and business policies (see discussion in Story (ed) 1995). As a consequence the role of the HR Department has itself come under scrutiny. Storey (2000) points out one of the important characteristics of HRM are that line managers should accept responsibility for making operational decisions about HRM and for driving the HR policy. In his 1992 book Storey described the possible roles of HR Departments in terms of two main dimensions. The first of these was the degree to which the HR Department intervened in the way managers at all levels undertook decisions on personnel related matters. The other dimension relates to whether their actions were related to the overall Strategic direction of the company or whether they were concerned with more tactical adjustments in staffing arrangements. The diagram below illustrates the way these two dimensions intersect. We will examine each of these dimensions in turn before considering the way in which they influence the overall approach to the HRM function.…
