Writing As An AVID Student
Writing is necessary to perfect as an AVID student. Without writing you would not be able to write your cornell notes or learning logs correctly. Everything begins with a process. In this case it is the writing process. Mr. Hill once assigned a prompt for both timed writing and process writing. I attached this ecology awareness prompt that was timed. Since time was limited I brainstormed on a sticky note and kept my ideas brief. When I began writing I expanded my ideas more. This is how I began to learn how to write using my time wisely and keeping things brief but sorted. Unfortunately, I did not finish the whole essay. I wrote five paragraphs but was missing one more to actually be complete. I made a few grammar errors here and there. Though

When writing an essay there really is more to it than just writing words down and making sure the words is used correctly. When someone is having thoughts they need to write them down and just go from there. At first it may not be perfect, but the writer can always go back and change the errors that need to be fixed. Before reading this I figured it was going to be about bad writing and one should not worry if it is not perfect. This made me realize that it is not about how you write, but what you write about and how to get your thoughts across.…

In the article, “Why So Many College Students Are Lousy at Writing--And How Mr. Miyagi Can Help," John Maguire gives his views to the Washington Post. John Maguire’s goal of this article is to change the audience’s mind and have them take action. Maguire would like to see the curriculum changed to starting with basic writing behaviors one at a time. Along with doing that, they should also implement courses, where they assume students know nothing about writing and work their way up from there. Throughout the article, he repeats that professors assume college students know how to properly write a paper, while in fact, they don’t know how to write a proper sentence. Maguire also states that professors or their teaching assistants need to “trick”…

What I need to do to improve and how I plan to do this: In future, instead of getting paralysis, or worrying that what I am writing about is not valid, I need to use what knowledge I have, back it up with theory and be confident that this is what’s needed. It would be better to get an essay in on time, than delay submitting it due to worry that it isn’t ‘good enough’.…

learned that to write an effective Essay you should first drift the topic of your essay for example make a diagram of the topic or issues you are going to talk about in your Essay. The topic should be in the middle and start to think about the subjects that are related to your topic, or subjects that will help you get your point across to your readers more affectively. I’ve also learned that by visualizing your story from the beginning to the end can help you to see the picture of what you want to talk about, what can be also helpful is while you visualizing your story you should write down as much information as possible in case you…

This semester I think I'll learn how to become a better writer by strengthening my knowledge in the use of advanced rhetorical devices, adding more depth and analysis to my body paragraphs, and by attaining a higher level of maturation in my writing. I'm hoping that taking this class now will translate into successes later in life when it's required to exercise the abilities I have and will continue to develop. My definition of nature would be anything that exists without the innovations man has created. Examples of nature can be found anywhere, from the canyons such as the Grand Canyon, Mountains like the Sierra Nevada, or Waterfalls such as Niagara Falls. Nature can be found in homes because of the existence of pets, plants, and trees all…

I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

College level writing is more formal than most of your daily writing. Casual writing is writing as you go writing as you’d speak, rather than however you typically choose to portray yourself on paper. Casual writing, sentences must be short and direct. A writing process is the most important step that I learned in this class. First of all, before writing a complete essay, I need to come up with the pre-writing which consists of free writing and brainstorming. I found this step essential because free writing helps me find as many supports and examples as possible and brainstorming allows me to organize and strengthen the structure of the essay. Moreover, writing everything related to the topic during prewriting steps helps me find more supporting details to put into the next step. I then use the step of brainstorming to map main ideas for an essay’s body…

I have heard from a professor that writing is not an easy thing to do. Many people fail to get their point across the first time when writing. I would agree with what the professor said. Many essays I have written are not perfect. I have made many mistakes when writing essays. I not only dislike writing, I get tired of writing when I have to write a lot. So my mind wanders off, and my body sits in class. Maybe I do not like to write because I am not good at it. Maybe I just need to practice more on my writing skills, and that way I can feel confident about myself. After all, I have never seen someone give up on something they are good at. Despite all these excuses as to why I am not a good writer, I still try and do my best when I am writing an essay. My English 49 portfolio includes essays which show my weaknesses, strengths, and areas of improvement.…
