Life in the trenches was not how I imagined it would be. Instead of marching gloriously into Germany with limited amount of difficulties, as the guy at the recruiting office and my friends had promised me, I found myself stuck in the same muddy, wet, uncomfortable ditch since I arrived in France. There were no cheers from grateful citizens, no parties in my honour and no prizes to be won. Only the endless tedium of trench life, with its muddy surrounding, unburied bodies and uniforms covered in lice.…

There were many new technologies introduced during WWI. One would be the use of poison gas, such as chlorine or mustard gas. This gas could blind, burn, or kill a man. People who experienced the poison gas said it was a cloud of colored smoke that would have a very strong smell to it. They even made gas masks that would prevent the inhalation of these gases. After WWI the use of poison gas during war was banned internationally. Another new “technology” that was introduced during this war was trench warfare. This involved two opposing dug out trenches that the soldiers would have to leave in order to attack. The area in between where they would race across was known as “no man’s land”, and most would be killed there. Life in the trenches was horrible and left many men with psychological problems after the war. One last invention brought to WWI was tanks. Although they were slow, they were able to make it across no man’s land. Because of this these tanks were greatly feared.…

In every war fought throughout the history of mankind, the dependence on weapons was highly sought after. From swords to guns, weaponry has progressed throughout the ages with each war fought. No other war has seen more advances in weaponry than World War II. Many of those advances made this war focused on artillery, land vehicles, naval ships and aircraft. These advances, although beneficial, have also led to more bloodshed on the battlefield because they can do a lot more damage than their previous versions. Understanding these advances helped the Allied Powers win over the Axis in many battles, but both sides contributed many advances in weaponry.…

I am a soldier in the war. I’m sorry for not telling you that I was joining the army but didn’t want to get your hopes up if something happened to me. Life as a soldier was difficult because you had small rations and a lot of people died from scared food and products that were already spoiled. I remember my Sargent telling me to be careful out there in the trenches because enemy forces could rush you at any time and kill you from behind. I will never forget the moment when our dugout was so muddy that we were camouflaging with the mud because of the rain. One side of the barbed wire was a ton of dead bodies that had a lot of flies and rats that were surrounding the bodies and they were eating their flesh. Also on the other side there was a machine gun turret that was killing enemies on No Mans Land. I got shot in the leg and caused me to get a wound and also I ended up in the hospital because I had trench foot, which is a foot disease that kills your skin cells. I will never forget how bad it smelled because of people dying and really sick. We always had to be on our guard because enemies attempted to bomb our trench. The soldiers that survived the bombing were wounded and many of them had lice, which made them very unhealthy because it lived on our skin. When we where on the battlefield we frequently had to have a gas mask present because the air was intoxicated with chemical gases that didn’t let us breathe. Every commander got there own personal rifle because the were in charge. I’m glad I wrote you this letter to tell you the truth. I am so sorry about every thing. I hope you understand why I did this.…

‘No modern nation could fight for its life with its men in uniform only; it must mobilise.’1 In a sense this captures the significance of technology in influencing British victory in the First World War. ‘World War 1 is often depicted as a war of machines in which technology and science played a pivotal role’2 although it was not just the new technology in which significantly influenced British victory in World War 1, it is the development and evolving of older technology, such as the tank and machine guns as well as a change in the way war was fought. The nature of the fighting in World War 1 ‘represents a fundamental change in the nature of warfare’3…

It was 115 degrees; the platoon was walking through the middle of the desert each of them with 40 pounds of gear on and an M16A2 rifle. It was summer time in the country of Afghanistan and the temperature was rising. At this point I asked myself what the hell I am doing here and why did I join the United States Army? Right when I was thinking that I felt a tug on my leg and there stood a young boy about 7 years old with only one arm, “Candy,Candy” he asked. Upon speaking with the local villagers we found out that his arm was taken from an improvised explosive device (IED) planted there by the rebeles that wanted to “rid their country of the weak”. That is when it occurred to me that I was here to protect my country from those that think that we are weak.…

Military technology and strategies have constantly evolved throughout history. However, within the last few centuries, the world has seen warfare evolve at such a rapid rate, that it seems no two wars are fought the same. With ever-changing technologies, soldiers’ duties and skills have had to adapt along with them. Yet, soldiers are not the only ones who have been affected by changes in warfare. With the emergence of the Napoleonic and World Wars, the people of a given country became involved in an effort known as a “total war.” As World War II came to an end though, the major powers in the world would never again get into a “total war.” All in all, many technological advances and tactics, in recent history, have dramatically changed the way wars are fought. The events that have seen a dramatic change in technology and/or warfare are as follows: the Industrial Revolution, the Napoleonic wars, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War (Buzard, 2006).…

World War I and World War II had a profound effect on many people living during those time periods. During World War I and World War II thousands lost their lives fighting for their respective countries. Men played a crucial part in fighting for their countries on the war front, but on the home front women played a crucial part also. During both World War I and World War II, women were called on to do work and take on major roles that were outside their traditional gender expectations while the men fought. Although the wars were a particularly violent time, it brought many changes, to everyday life, to the economic and social relations of men and women, and gender roles.…
