Campbell states that myths are primarily based on the hero and his journey. He goes on to say that the hero’s journey consists of three parts: his retreat from the world, trials and victories he makes along the way, and his return. Some may disagree with this idea, convinced that Campbell holds the belief that all myths are the same. However, that disagreement is a mere misunderstanding of Campbell’s explanation, which is not that myths are exactly alike, but that their general construction follows the same idea. Even with that clarification, still, some may wonder if there is true evidence that myths solely rely on the journey. Without a doubt, any myth could promptly defend Campbell’s theory, but two that most prominently demonstrate the truth behind his perception are the stories Ramayana and Yeelen.…

What are myths? How have they evolved? And why do we still so desperately need them? These are the questions that are being answered in Karen Armstrong’s a short history of myth. The book takes you on an adventure throughout time all the way back to the paleolithic period and there myths all the way to the great western transformation. Armstrong describes human beings as “meaning-seeking creatures” (pg.2) meaning that we as humans need to create myths and rituals so that we can better understand why things happen and why we are here. Throughout the book Ms. Armstrong is showing us how myth has influenced society and human way of life. Also how the modern day world is without myth making us more scientific minded than spiritual we are more closed minded. Armstrong also shows us the transition from simple creatures in hunter gatherer societies to a complex society. Armstrong explains why we as humans in the past needed myth to understand more about how we should live and why things happen. They also used myth to justify what they do for example the book she describes in hunter gatherer tribes how they created myth of hunting gods or goddesses so that they don’t feel bad that they are just killing animals for their own gain now they are killing for a divine purpose as well as creating rituals to justify killing animals.…

According to World Mythology 3rd Edition by Donna Rosenberg myths show us the importance of living a life to its fullest and the spirituality we need to make it though. "They depict humans as integral part of a larger universe, and they impart a feeling of awe for all the mysterious and marvelous in life." Myths are an important way to understand ourselves; we gain insight into our own attitudes and values. The world's greatest epics reflect the cultural influence of peoples who preceded them by hundreds and even thousands of years. Myths were originally created as entertaining stories with a serious purpose. They were used to portray the natural complexity of the universe (creation and fertility myths) and to instruct people in the attitudes and behavior necessary to function successfully in society. According to Classical Mythology 4th Edition by S. Harris & G. Platzner "the word myth is derived from the Greek word mythos, a story typically involving gods and/or heroes whose adventures represent significant aspects of human experience. Greek myth originated with anonymous storytellers who created tales about gods and heroes that were transmitted orally for many generations before being crystallized in written…

It usually attempts to explain a phenomenon or strange occurrence without regard to fact of common sense and appeals to the emotions rather than reason. A myth is less historical than a legend and usually persists through oral transmission, as do legends and fables.…
