Workplace Observation

Before I begin talking about my observations on the three groups I observed, I should give a background of where and whom I studied to give you a clearer understanding. I work in Orange County at a donut shop and I just box donuts and make lattes/Frappuccino’s all day long. My shifts are always morning time (around 5am usually) so people tend to be half asleep most of the time because they just woke up and most of them are heading to work.

The first group I observed were a group of people who worked at a hospital nearby my workplace. Most of them order donuts for their work and buy themselves a latte to wake themselves up. For example, I had a Disneyland worker come in and order donuts and drinks which he seemed very impatience and was very ignorant to me when I repeated his order to him to make sure I had everything right. As I ring him up he showed me his ID for a Disney discount but at that time my manager is on lunch and only he can do discounts. He was very unhappy and then asked to speak to a manager. I then had to tell him again that our manager isn’t here and that he was on lunch, which he then began threatening to write a bad yelp review. I told the gentleman that there was nothing I could do and apologize for the inconvenience. He then proceeded to make comments under his breath as he paid and all I could do was tell to him a great day. In my situation the things that affected each person to code switch was due to time, environment, attitude, and whom they were with. I noticed that in a professional atmosphere such as the nurses there wasn’t much body language with each other, because they are co-workers and there’s a limit to the amount of touching. However, my observation with the group of girls in the car allowed me to notice that they body language was more relaxed and they were comfortable with dancing together in a car and singing. I also realized that we give a different body language depending on our attitude.
