Working Girl: The Obstacles Within Corporate America

Introduction In the movie Working Girl, the star Tess McGill (Melanie Griffith) is a hard working

woman who is determined to reach the top of the stock market world by hard work. As

she turns 30 she is still stuck in clerical work so when she starts working for Katherine

Parker (Sigourney Weaver) she is glad that Katherine is willing to accept input and ideas

from her. However, when Katherine goes on a skiing trip and breaks her leg she asks

Tess to look after things. With that responsibility Tess simply takes over her office,

her apartment, even her wardrobe. Enraged that her boyfriend is cheating on her, Tess

sets out to do a deal while Katherine is away. She teams up with Jack Trainer (Harrison

Ford) to close the deal before Katherine's return; and the two slowly fall in love little

knowing that Jack is Katherine's boyfriend.

In this movie Corporate America is portrayed the way it is in life. The atmosphere in

corporate America has progressed toward a higher complexity. The education and skills

needed to succeed must be met in order to climb the corporate ladder. Tess strives to

better herself by taking speech class and attending seminars. Tess' knowledge and

ambition also gave her the necessary advantage to enter into an esteemed brokerage firm.

Here she was left with the desire to reach the top of Corporate America. Taking the steps

of going to school and acquiring a degree are key to the rise in Corporate America. In this

movies, knowledge and skill was key to being successful. Without valuable contributions

that Tess made, rising to the top would have taken years. Greed, scandals, favors, and

corruption all take place in Corporate America. At the top of the ladder these evils start.

With ultimate power over everyone below, co-workers are at the executive's mercy.

Marissa Mayer is a woman who takes risks and that is why she is where she is. Her biggest risk was working on Google, which was also her biggest achievement. When she received an offer from Google, it wasn’t the great company it is nowadays, it was only a starting project, which Marissa gave a 2% chance of succeeding, but she thought it was the right decision to take the job (and it definitely was) so she turned into one of the company’s first twenty employees and its first female engineer. Google succeeded and so did Marissa Mayer: she learnt a lot from being part of the process of building a company and all the knowledge she acquired where only the starting of the path to becoming the youngest woman (she was only 33) to be part of Fortune magazine’s…

Working Girl, directed by Mike Nichol, recalls a rags-to-riches story in a modern society where the class divisions are precisely sharp. Set in the 1980s, the film provides a historical situation of inequitable distribution: this inequity sways all the characters’ behavior. Though Tess McGill and Jack Trainer spark up a romance, it is Tess’ acquisitiveness that make the romance sizzle. In order to impersonate the bourgeoisie, Tess undergoes an extraordinary transformation. Tess, a proletariat, learns that if she wants to get ahead, she has to act, talk, and dress like the bourgeoisie. The film offers clear evidence of conspicuous consumption—the clothing Tess’ boss, Katherine Parker, wears—suggesting a negative example of the Marxist theory and a tacit endorsement of the free market.…

Corruption is defined as dishonest or illegal behavior especially by powerful people (Merriam Webster). There is perhaps no company in our nation’s history that further exemplifies this word than Enron. Enron’s history of fraud, laundering, and deception is now known world-wide, and stands as the lead example for future companies practicing unethical behaviors. Enron’s corrupted culture, cultivated by CEO Jeffrey Skilling, made some very rich while ultimately leaving thousands in ruin.…

Work is defined as a job or activity that one does regularly in order to earn money, yet the concept of work seems to be a controversial topic many argue about. Those who do work are often happy with their job but there are also those who are dissatisfied. Perhaps this controversy is due to Social Darwinism, also known as the survival of the fittest, by brainwashing society to believe that success is being superior to others. This mutual theme of Social Darwinism is presented amongst the poems Night Waitress by Lynda Hull, Singapore by Mary Oliver, and Hard Work by Stephen Dunn. The biggest dispute is if people are working to survive or working to be…

Although the facility was the only type of its kind, it had the worst reputation. In Richard Powers’ novel, Gain, he intertwines two fictional stories to analyze the growth of large corporation in America and the deterioration of the individual as a potential result. He tells the story of the rise of a family soap making business, J. Clare and Sons, into a large-scale corporation over a span of 150 years. As a second story line, he incorporates the end of the life of Laura Bodey, a divorced real estate agent with ovarian cancer living in Lacewood, a town centered around the corporation’s headquarters. He makes a unique statement about the increasingly detrimental nature of business as it grows in scale. He never condemns Clare International nor does he overly-victimize any individual character that the corporation effects. He does not tell the story of J. Clare and Sons nor that of Laura Bodey perfectly objectively, but his opinions are subtly placed so that he leaves the reader with the ability to decide for themself whether or not current American businesses do more harm than good. He uses the characters of the two founding members of Clare International as tools to analyze the different elements and theories of capitalism and different motives for gain. He also uses the death of many characters in the novel to analyze the effect that the swelling growth of corporations has on individuals in its path.…
