Word Choice In Brown's Wieland Or The Transformation
The excerpt selected is from the novel Wieland; or, the Transformation. The author of the American novel is an American-born writer, Charles Brockden Brown. The quote was expressed by Clara, the protagonist of the story. Carwin, the supposed antagonist, is seemingly trying to deceive Clara to fall under his wishes. Even though Carwin is trying to trick Clara, she knows that freedom is on her mind and that her willpower is strong enough to stop the artifices. At the same time, Clara believes that Pleyel is no longer on her side because of the many accusations of inappropriate behaviors between Carwin and Clara. Clara contemplates what else could go wrong in her life than what has already happened; therefore, Clara allows Carwin to an interview for him to repair the damage of which he has brought throughout Clara’s life. The vocabulary Brown used, or Clara had said, was highly sophisticated. The use of sophisticated word choice allows for non-vague descriptions as it allows for more detail. One example of using high sophisticated word choice in the excerpt is as follows: “I strove in vain to believe in the assuaging influence of time, to look forward to the birth-day of new hopes, and the re-exaltation of that luminary, of whose effulgencies I had so long and so liberally partaken.” (Clara, Par. 2). In the quote, Clara talks about how influenced time is doing her wrong, by using the word “assuaging,” and hoping to see renewed hope that would make her life better. Clara said the words “re-exaltation of that luminary” which means that she wanted extreme happiness. The quote also used words like “effulgences” to note that she wants a brighter future.
