Women Suffrage Movement

Throughout history, we have examined the most influential works contributing to political theory in the history of Western civilization. Beginning with our classical political thinkers Socrates, Platos and Aristotle and our modern political thinkers, Machiavelli, Locke and Rousseau. The works of these political thinkers have valued the hegemony of manhood and they have also justified their low respect on women. Their works can be viewed as the foundation of women’s inequalities in the public sphere. Centuries have passed and now we’ve seen how women have resisted the constructions that our male political thinkers have created for women.

I will begin to explore the important works of classical political thinkers such as Aristotle. After the classical political thinkers, I will move on to analyze the work of modern thinkers such as Machiavelli and Rousseau. In addition to analyzing the political works I will examine how women have struggled against these depictions. Women Suffrage Movement would be considered our first wave of feminism so I believe it’s important to begin with this movement and their struggles. The second wave of feminism will also be evaluated which consisted of feminist fighting for civil rights and against racism some of them were Angela Davis and Audre Lorde. Lastly the third wave of feminism payed more attention to immigrant women, sexuality and the concept of intersectionality. a. Aristotle Politics
i. First Principle in Biology
1. Aristotle views that women are by nature inferior to men because of their biological arrangement.
2. Male and female each have separate ability or faculty, the male is superior because it can procreate while the female is inferior since she must carry the child.
3. According to Aristotle the first principle of biology is sexual differences because these differences have an impact on the rest of our development. ii. Women in the Household
1. Aristotle states that the household first concern is having a wife, the male and female can unite to ensure a good life for them and their children.
2. By having a wife, the man will have a child that will secure an advantage for the husband in the future.
3. There cannot be equal power between the husband and wife, because nature has made on sex stronger and the other sex
