Women In Sir Gawain And The Green Night Essay
Throughout history women have been given no credit for all the work they have done. From helping lead the country to tricking people in their favor. Women like Lady Macbeth, Grendel’s Mother, and even the Wife of a Nobel Man in Sir Gawain and the Green Night, they played a big part in their stories that were very undermined and unappreciated.
Lady Macbeth was her husband’s backbone for the entirety of her life. When he first received the visons she was the one who helped him complete what needed to be done for him to be crowned king. From hiding the knife to talking him into doing other evils. She always worked to help her husband as much as possible. Even when she started going crazy she hid it from her husband to ensure that he could lead without fear of messing up. When she heard that her son was killed she thought that he had to be avenged. She knew that his death was his own fault, and yet she died trying to avenge him. Throughout her dialogue in Beowulf it shows that she is hiding her pain for losing her son in challenging Beowulf. She thought that if they fought in her lair she would win and kill the person that killed her son. Her character is underrated because no one realizes the motherly feeling that women have for their child and if anything were to happen to them that the mother will do anything in their power to make it better. People speculate that Grendel’s Mother died on purpose so that she could be with her son, which is believable. Looking at this story from another angle is that when written you can see how women were thought of because they didn’t even give her a real name, but rather referred to her as Grendel’s Mother. You can see by this that women didn’t have the same rights as men and the mother was only added to have another fighting element to this
