Women Entrepreneurs in Business

While women still face an uphill battle when it comes to breaking the corporate glass ceiling, many women are finding success these days as entrepreneurs, building their own businesses without those ceilings to hold them down. The growth rate of women-owned businesses has climbed steadily, even as they continue to face challenges with getting the financing and other assistance they need to succeed. However, there's no doubt that women entrepreneurs are, as a group, innovative and highly successful.

"Look at women in business today, and you see a distinct new generation of Entrepreneurs. They are experienced, educated and have an appetite for growth." – Julie Weeks, Director of Research, Center for Women's Business Research. The 90's marked the start of the phenomenal growth rate of businesses started by and owned by women. In an a report released by the Center for Women's Business Research the latest data reported in "Key Facts about Women-Owned Business-a 2007 Update" shows that for the past two decades majority women-owned firms have continued to grow at around two times the rate of all other firms. Between 1997 and 2006 the number of privately held firms by women of color grew five times faster than all private held firms. Women-owned firms account for 41% of all privately held firms, employed more than 12.8 million people and generate $1.9 trillion in sales. Three percent of all women-owned firms have revenues of $1 million or more compared with 6% of men-owned firms. Women-owned firms with revenues of $1 million or more are more likely to market their products and services nationally. The largest share of women-owned firms is in the service sector. More than two-thirds (69.0 %) of these firms (5.3 million) are in services; 14.4% (1.1 million) are in the retail trade; and 7.7% (0.6 million) are in real estate, rental and leasing.     Literature pertaining to entrepreneurial women is very limited. There are numerous books that depict the lives of wage-earning women in Canada; however works on self-employed women are uncommon. The Business of Women- Marriage, Family, and Entrepreneurship in British Columbia, 1901-1951, was written by Melanie Buddle in 2010, under UBC Press. In The Business of Women, Buddle attempts to highlight the key features of entrepreneurial women in the 1900’s in Western Canada, exploring how and why women entered the business world.     Through history women have fought a long standing battle for equality in the workforce. There was a time that women could only do very specific gendered work for a lower wage. It was expected that women run the house, raise the kids and men went to work. Times have changed as women have fought to gain independence and equality and the right to choose what they want to do with their lives. The use of women in the workforce really began to change during World War II. For the first time women were pulled from the home and placed in factories as front line workers and given the responsibility of a man’s job and were still expected to run the home. According to the web site Holding the Line, World War II proved to be the catalyst that opened new doors for women and eventually changed the way women were regarded as a viable workforce. For the first time women left the "traditional jobs" and accomplished job tasks previously believed to be beyond their capabilities.     The term woman at work has two different meanings when examined historically. The first meaning a historian would think of would be from the 18th century when women at work meant women working in the household.     A woman in today’s society has many roles. She is a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a cook, a caretaker, and much more. Within the past century, however, her role has been altered and added to. She is now, also, a worker. Some women are even the main source of income in their households. To those of us who have been raised in late 20th century, this occurrence doesn’t seem unusual. Most of our mothers have had jobs. We have seen or heard of many successful businesswomen, but women have not always been treated as equals in the workforce. In the early 1900s, women were mainly responsible for maintaining their household. If they worked, it was normally on their own farm or in factories at a lower wage than men, but not in a formal career. When World War II began, more women were allowed into the workforce, but were fired when it ended. The 1970s brought another wave of women workers when laws were passed to give women equal rights to work. Women have been a growing part of the workforce since. It had many immediate effects, such as a small economic boom because of more people working. Also, it inspired many feminist movements. Today, there are nearly as many women in the workforce as men, and there are no signs of regression. Although women still face sexism and discrimination, the woman’s role is changing from the weaker sex to the equal partner.…
