    Women Oppression

Marilyn Frye makes a very bold statement in her essay “Oppression” stating that “women are oppressed as women, but men are not oppressed as men” (Frye, 16). She claims that women are oppressed as women, because in our society females are defined by preconceived stereotypes of their gender. However, men are not oppressed as men because the male population holds social power and choose to not stigmatize their own gender. Instead they choose to stereotype and place social restrictions on the female gender in order to create a system to oppress women. This oppression is manifested in double-bind situations, social rituals, and stereotyped gender responsibilities and roles. From this oppression of women, men have benefited greatly and males’ lives have been made much easier. This is why I believe that Marilyn Frye is correct in her assertion, because it is absurd to think that men would be oppressed as men, when they have been controlling the gender restrictions for centuries.…

    Women Oppression

An underdeveloped, underprivileged country cannot prosper and stabilize if half of its population is marginalized. A Chinese proverb states that women hold up half the sky, inspiring Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn to write the book, Half the Sky. Their intention is to open people’s eyes to less fortunate women’s oppression. Their argument incorporates both logic and emotion -through both statistics and horrifying anecdotal true stories. These two journalists show that women’s oppression with regard to sex trafficking, violence and lack of education is essentially the equivalent of slavery. Over 150 years after the Emancipation Proclamation, why does something so similar to slavery still exist? Kristof and WuDunn explain that the situation can be altered, with the help of American government and personal donations. If America used 1/12 of 1% of the amount of money it spends on militaristic necessities, women around the world could benefit. Others argue that prostitution is not forced but a right to females. And those people argue that the United States has little impact on reducing human trafficking and increasing women’s rights. But that kind of mentality is incorrect, due to the fact that even the smallest aid will make an impact.…

According to the International Violence Against Women Act on Amnesty International’s site, “Violence against women and girls represents a global health, economic development, and human rights problem. At least one out of every three women worldwide has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime, with rates of domestic violence reaching 70% in some countries.” This abuse of women and their rights is something more developed countries are taking very seriously. Over 7,000 women in India will be murdered by their family or their husband’s family because of arguments about dowries. “Violence against women is rooted in a global culture of discrimination which denies women equal rights with men and which legitimizes the appropriation of women's bodies for individual gratification or political ends. Every year, violence in the home and the community devastates the lives of millions of women.” (Amnesty). The study of why and how women are treated they way they have been is a fairly recent study. Purkayastha explains when this study arose,…

There is a lot of talk about woman’s rights in Pakistan and other Muslim countries these days. The Western media is projecting a very gruesome and poor plight of woman in Muslim countries with the intension of distorting the true image of Islam. Unfortunately, this propaganda is proving quite effective and the entire west and a small section of females in our society have misinterpreted Islam as being the cause of their troubles instead of the Aryan culture that we have inherited.…

The persistent violation of their fundamental rights is nothing short of a crime against humanity. Mere condemnation of these infringements is not enough. It is imperative to initiate urgent remedial measures. The phenomenal increase in violence against females in Pakistan is abhorrent and indicative of the degeneration of the society. However, there could be a silver lining to this dark cloud of oppression because it symbolizes a reaction to the growing awareness of women about their inalienable rights. Violence, it is said, is the last refuge of the incompetent, and in the face of resistance on the part of the victim, it is the sole recourse of the perpetrator.…

    empowerment of women

AbstractIn this paper, I tell the story of a grass-roots campaign of poor, rural women in the Mehrunnisa district of Chittagong province in Bangladesh. My objective is to examine how feminist activists strategically use and create social spaces to generate collective dialogue and critical reflection on issues of patriarchy and gendered violence. A related aim is to highlight the ways in which activists working at the grass-roots level theorize the interrelationships among their own political actions, their vision(s) of empowerment, and the everyday gendered spaces they seek to transform. In the following analysis, I begin by briefly situating this campaign within recent feminist writings on empowerment and violence in the context of `Third World ' development politics more generally and of Bangladesh more specifically. I argue that a lack of explicit engagement with space in much of the feminist literature on these topics limits our ability to adequately apprehend the nature, content, and meanings of women 's political actions (Staeheli, 1996).…
