Woman With Mirror Canvas # 13: Art Analysis
The artwork I have chosen for this week is Woman with Mirror, Canvas #13 (p. 78).

At first glance this artwork shows bold beautiful colors with varying line patterns, geometric shapes with varying masses, with implied motion, which seems to break the picture down into five vertical sections. Each section is unique it is characteristics of visual elements.

The first section with the lime green and yellow lines and geometric rectangles appear to be static, stopping just at the yellow line before the next section. However, the one vertical yellow line gives a feeling on fluidity, moving forever up or down. The yellow and black lines when they are met together shows the curves of a voluptuous woman in the mirror as the name of the canvas

I believe the bright colors are making a statement to emphasize on the major parts of the artwork. Showing the motion, makes you move your eyes along the imaginary wave. The slight tone of yellow makes me think of the sun come through the wave. The soft light of the off white background makes me think of a light blue sky that is clear of everything. Vague colors made me stare at the picture for long periods of time so that way I could understand why he created this on in particular. I thought maybe like times when he got bored and went to the museum; he created a scene of his bus ride there. Maybe he pictures himself at a beach and what it would be like to sit and watch someone ride a…

The Red Tree depicts a young girl moving about her days almost consumed by depression and sadness. However Tan indicates that even when things seem overwhelming there is hope for a better day. In illustration ___ we see the salient image of a young girl trapped in a bottle by her oversized diving helmet. Her posture clearly indicates that she is unhappy and the bottle is slowly filling with water. There is no chance of escape as her oversized helmet clearly will not fit out the narrow neck of the bottle. Tan’s effective use of dark blue and grey further conveys the sombre mood and difficulty the young girl is facing. Through effective use of vector lines the viewer’s eyes are drawn along the horizon to contrasting white clouds, symbolising perhaps that there is hope on the horizon. Tan further emphasizes the sadness consuming the protagonist in illustration __. The salient image of a gigantic fish hangs over the young girl walking alone along a city street. The fish’ gaping mouth creates a vector line to the young girl who is hunched over and clearly unhappy, as she remains in the shadow of the fish while everyone else goes about their business ignoring her. Again, Tan’s…

When looking at Pablo Picasso’s “Girl Before a Mirror”, one can obviously make out a girl observing herself in front of a mirror. The woman is portrayed one way before the mirror and another way in her reflection. Picasso is obviously sending a message behind the meaning of his work. He also, more than likely, has a reason and story behind why he rendered the work of art. This message and story become useless when it is reproduced onto a computer screen, according to John Berger. In his Ways of Seeing, Berger explains how technology accompanied by today’s world has somewhat tainted the worth and overall beauty of experiencing art. One no longer has the ability to remove him or herself from reality or as Clive Bell would say, have an “aesthetic…

The first photo is taken of a steer wrestler and his downed steer. It portrays texture in the rough dirt ground and the wrinkles in his clothing. It portrays movement in the man's arms as they are being thrown in the air. It portrays value evident in the range of dark and light shadings in the photo. And it also portrays contrast in the range of values that stand out against one another. The second photo is taken of ancient ruins in a canyon in N.M. It also portrays value in the dark and light shadows, texture in the ridges of the wall, and contrast in the dark values that pop against the light ones, however rather than movement, it has depth, line, pattern, and rhythm in the repetitive lines on the rock wall.…

These ideas are represented through numerous visual techniques within the photo. A salient image produced directs our attention to the lady sitting in the middle, isolated from the people around her. The salient image is produced by vector lines, that is the appearance of a circular shape or perimeter around the lady, this further influencing our idea of alienation. In addition the lady is placed in the very centre of the image drawing attention to her loneliness.…

Both Jenny Saville and Pablo Picasso have produced significant pieces of work, showing their view and portrayal of women. Jenny Saville is a contemporary British artist born in 1970, whereas Picasso is the co-founder of the cubist movement, producing abstract work. Despite these movements differences, both artists have produced work on a similar ground, using women as their subject. Saville's most recent exhibition was in 2012 at the Modern Art Oxford Norton Museum of Art, in Florida. I recently saw Picassos work at the Tate Modern where his work is currently on display, I was particularly interested in the piece "Nude Woman with Necklace".…

What makes a piece of art art? Is it the creation itself or is it a combination of elements that make a piece a good piece of art. Artist use elements to add depth and meaning to the pieces they create. Artist such as Vincent Van Gogh, Sol LeWitt, Diego Velazquez, and Edward Hopper all had pieces that they used different forms to help capture the attention of the viewer and express their true meaning with the techniques they used in their portraits.…

The art depicted above is Annibale Carracci’s Head of a youth. The line form this shows is dance of curving lines and ragged, irregular lines. I believe that the use of these lines help to give the artwork a sense of movement that vertical lines would have been unable to produce. The shape I believe is depicted is more of an organic shape because it is irregular and curving. It appears to be much like a quick sketch without exact lines used; therefore I would define it as irregular when looking up close. The use of likes and shading implies that there is a rounded person as described in the book. This work of art uses implied depth to convey a three dimensional work of art. Because this is a drawing you see the space of the surface all at once. I would say the perspective is eye level because the man is at the height of the artist or viewers eyes. The atmospheric perspective is achieved by using different value and detail. There seems to be no evidence of time depicted in this drawing. I also see no evidence of movement throughout this piece. This work of art uses chiaroscuro which is shading from light to dark it helps to create roundness. This use helps to make the observer better understand the setting of the art. This is considered achromatic because it is black and white. There are different hues used throughout the drawing. The color scheme is monochromatic. The form (or what I see) is a man resting his head almost contemplating something. The content (meaning I get from what I see) is that the world is full of mystery and should be explored.…

    Artist Reflection

“I lay low and watch the bridges burn”(Lauryn Hill), this is one of my favorite song lyrics written by the infamous Lauryn Hill. Why do I enjoy this lyric so much? What makes it so memorable and relatable? Artists like Lauryn, Miguel, and Sarah Bareilles are all artists that I believe use their craft to convey emotion and story telling. Every story they write uses their lyrics as poetry to express emotions, feelings, triumphs, and failures. What does this say about myself as an artist? For one, I use these artists as inspirations that inspire me to transpose their ideas of art into my own work. I like to listen diligently to my inspirations to emulate them. I am so transfixed to their art that I want to do what they do. I want people listening to my art, to feel these same feelings that I feel when I listen to my inspirations. This feeling of wanting to “emulate” my favorite artists comes from their originality (it inspires more art, and speaks to other “art” and artists). I find their art so amazing and beautiful that I want to make art just as powerful as theirs.…
