Both father and mother passed away by age five
Was raised by aunt and uncle along with 8 other cousins
Dropped out of High School at age 15 to help out Family
Often traveled out of state working as a laborer on farms from California to Washington, D.C.

• Enlisted into the Texas Army National Guard in 1952 during the Koren War.
• Later switched to the Regular Army in 1955
• After completing airborne training, he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC
• Attended and completed Special Forces training at Fort
Bragg, NC
• Assigned to 5th Special Forces Group Fort Campbell,
Kentucky
Military Life
• Deployed to Vietnam on May 2, 1968 with his 12 man special forces team
• Endured 6 hours of hell in combat fighting against the
North Vietnamese
• Exposed himself constantly to withering enemy fire
• Refused to be stopped despite numerous severe wounds
• Saved the lives of at least eight men

• He was evacuated to the base camp, examined, and thought to be dead
• The doctor was about to zipper up the bag when he managed to spit in his face
• Sustained a total of 37 separate bullet, bayonet, and shrapnel wounds from the six hour fight with the enemy
