Without Air Conditioning
Cox seems to believe that without air conditioning everyone would be happier, come closer together, and move slower. He might be right, but to some extent. Without air conditioning, many problems would arise in our comfortably cool country.
Like Cox said, without AC businesses and schools might have to close for days, weeks, or even months at a time. While this might mean that people would have more time off to spend with their families and friends, it also means that those people are not making money and the children are not learning. If families do not have enough money they cut out things such as going to the movies, shopping, and traveling to different parts of the country. Being able to work through the hottest times of the summer has enabled us to make progress and money faster than ever before. Without air conditioning, the United States would not be able to keep up with the countries that we currently work with. We have grown accustomed and reliant on AC and the transition to a post-air conditioned America would be fatal to our economy.
In addition, people seem to be grumpier and less productive when it is hot. When it gets warm outside, people run for the shelter of the AC because it makes them happier and they are still able to get things done. Many Americans have active lifestyles that cannot come to a sudden stop simply because it is hot outside. Air conditioning allows for them to keep up with this active way of life. Without air conditioning, people would be forced to not exercise. This would greatly contribute to the growing concern of obesity in the United States.
Additionally, there are many health concerns that come with the heat including dehydration, heatstroke, and many others. Air conditioning lessens these illnesses
