Wishes: Thought and Highly Unlikely Wish
Wishes, what it would be, for you, for someone else or the world. Is there anything a person wouldn’t do to have three wishes? Think about it! One person has a set of goals for their whole life, they long for a desire that is out of reach, but upon utterance of a few words in that instance that fantasy becomes reality. If I were to have the opportunity of having three wishes, the first thought that will come to my mind will be myself, myself and myself, but if I will stop and think deeply then I will think about my family and others and try and use all the wishes wisely so that it benefits me as well as others.

We all want something or the other at some point of our life. As a kid all we want is a chocolate or a small toy and as we grow older our demands keep changing. As they say desires are endless don't they? Well I don't know about you but here's what I would wish for. First, I would wish for a good education as they say education is the gateway to success. It gives us knowledge of the world around us, while opening doors to brilliant career opportunities. In today’s modern and competitive society, we cannot deny the fact that we must equip ourselves with plenty of knowledge. Education helps to become a successful person. As a whole, education can give us a better life in the future that is why education is my first wish. Secondly, I would wish for plenty of money which would last me forever. Money cannot buy happiness, but with money I could help the poor, donate money to orphanages, homes for the aged, schools for the blind, charity, etcetera because with money comes responsibility. Last of all I would like to wish for the good health of my family and the entire world. Health is very important to mankind, in today’s world there are many diseases such as cancer, heart disease, malaria and many more. So with my final wish all these life taking diseases cannot plague our world anymore. With good health we can live our lives to the fullest.

The short stories “The Third Wish” written by Joan Aiken and “Those Three Wishes” written by Judith Gorog share the main similarity of having a three wishes motif. These two stories may share a similar motif, but they differ in several important aspects. “The Third Wish” and “Those Three Wishes” differ in the way the story is told. Also, “The Third Wish” and “Those Three Wishes” are different, because they use the three wishes motif in different ways. Last but not least, the stories have a different plot line. In “The Third Wish”, the story starts off with Mr. Peters driving through a forest and overhearing a commotion. Mr. Peters finds the King of the Forest in swan form trapped in thorns. He frees the King of the Forest and receives three wishes in return. After receiving his three wishes, he wishes for a wife as beautiful as the forest. The next morning, he meets his new wife Leita. At first, everything is going great between him and Leita, but he soon finds out that Leita is actually a swan that is separated from her sister. One day, Mr. Peters feels sorry for Leita and wishes she was a swan again. Then, Leita is reunited with her sister, and Mr. Peters grew old and died peacefully without ever using the third wish. On the other hand, the short story “Those Three Wishes” has a much different plot line. The story begins with Melinda Alice walking to school early and alone so she could study for her math test. She came along a snail and wanted to crush it. When she was about to crush it, the snail gave her three wishes in order to spare its life. Melinda uses her first wish to make sure her next thousand wishes come true. While walking to school, Melinda starts to contemplate uses for her wishes. Melinda ends up using her second wish to wish that she was always perfectly dressed and she used her third wish to get pierced ears and small gold earrings. After her third wish, Melinda begins to relieve the power of the wishes and considers using her wishes to solve…

This essay is to compare and contrast the two short stories “How I Met My Husband” and “The Diamond Necklace”. The theme in both of these stories is the fact that you should appreciate what you have and not wish for what you can’t have. As the title hints at, in both of these stories there is the desire for something that leads to a life changing situation. For one person the ending is a good one but, for the second story, the ending shows by wishing for something that you do not have can lead to a change in your whole life’s situation. There is love in both stories with the contrast being that in the first story the love is for a man; the second story’s love is for the material things that a woman believes is what would make her happy. This all ties in to the idiom of “be careful what you wish for, you just may get it” (Idioms and Phrases, n.d.). This phrase means that sometimes “if you get things that you desire, there may be unforeseen and unpleasant consequences” (Idioms and Phrases, n.d.). In the two stories of this essay, there was something unforeseen that happened in one and very unpleasant consequences in the other. The authors in both stories have used imagery to show the consequences of wanting something you can’t have. In “The Diamond Necklace” the imagery shows where a young beautiful lady who was never happy with her life ends up looking and feeling much worse. “Her hair was badly done, her skirts were awry, and her hands were red” (de Maupassant, 1884). In the story “How I Met My Husband”, the imagery is more subtle and has a happier ending than the first story. The author describes how the girl in the story feels when she realizes a letter will not be coming from someone who she believes she loves. “One day walking back with the hydro bill…

“If you could wish for one thing, what would it be?” I was asked this question by a friend of mine whose mother recently passed away. At first, I was startled by her question, wondering why she would ask this. She said, “Do you know what I would do, if I had a wish?” I looked at her, wondering if she has finally reached her breaking point, she continues “I would go back in time, and erase my mother’s pains, before her death”. When I heard her answer, I was surprised, I expected her to say, “Bring my mother back to life”, but instead, she only wished for a moment of joy. If I was asked this question, two years ago, I would probably say “wealth” or “power”. Not knowing the extent of a wish, or things that could be accomplish by such wish. To know that if this question was asked by many people, they too would probably wish for wealth or something similar. And knowing that many people will choose “I” instead of “we”, really made me think of the purpose of my existence, and what I would do if I had a wish.…
