Wireless Transmission of electricity
Abstract:
In this paper, we present the concept of transmitting power without using wires i.e., transmitting power as microwaves from one place to another is in order to reduce the transmission and distribution losses. This concept is known as Microwave Power transmission (MPT). This paper is mainly concentrated on : i) The most popular concept known as Tesla Theory, ii) The microwave power transmission(MPT) called Solar power satellite, and iii) The highly efficient fiber lasers for wireless power transmission. The output microwave power ranges from 50 W to 200 W at 2.45 GHz.

KEYWORDS: Microwave Power transmission (MPT), Nikola Tesla, Rectenna, Solar Power Satellites (SPS), Wireless Power transmission (WPT)

INTRODUCTION:
Human beings are well accomsisted with the electrical and the components .we may live without having food and shelter but we can’t live without electricity. We the humans are efficient in production, but are not as much efficient in transmitting .The percentage of loss of power during transmission and distribution is approximated as 26%. The main reason for power loss during transmission and distribution is the resistance of wires used for grid. The efficiency of power transmission can be improved to certain level by using high strength composite over head conductors and underground cables that use high temperature but, the transmission is still inefficient. According to the World Resource Institute (WRI), India’s electricity grid has the highest transmission and distribution losses in the world – a whopping 27%. Numbers published by various Indian government agencies put that number at 30%, and greater than 40%.

WIRELESS POWER TRANSMISSION:
Nikola Tesla he is who invented radio and shown us he is indeed the “Father of Wireless”. Nikola Tesla is the one who first conceived the idea Wireless Power Transmission and demonstrated “the transmission of electrical energy without wires" that depends upon electrical conductivity as early

Over the next decade, the most vibrant Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) markets will involve the contactless charging of portable and mobile equipment, in particular consumer electronics and electric vehicles. Today, development teams worldwide are stretching the boundaries of physics using available components to create systems that are able to compete with the efficiencies of wired solutions while offering the conveniences of wire free connections. In the 1890's famous scientist and engineer Nikola Tesla dreamt of wireless transfer of power. He envisioned a world, in which all electricity is transferred wirelessly, but the idea was more or less abandoned and highly efficient copper cables became the basis for modern electricity infrastructure. Then, a few years ago, Marin Soljačić, an assistant professor of physics at MIT, was dragged out of bed by the insistent beeping of a cell phone. In his exhausted state, he wished the phone would just begin charging itself as soon as it was brought into the house. So, Soljačić started searching for ways to transmit power wirelessly. Soljačić found magnetic resonance a promising means of electricity transfer because magnetic fields travel freely through air yet have little effect on the environment or, at the appropriate frequencies, on living beings. Working with MIT physics professors John Joannopoulos and Peter Fisher and three students, he devised a simple setup that wirelessly powered a 60-watt light bulb. The MIT work has attracted the attention of consumer-electronics companies and the auto industry. The U.S. Department of Defense, which is funding the research, hopes it will also give soldiers a way to automatically recharge batteries.…

Abstract –This project involves discovering how wireless connections occur in the atmosphere using a beam of laser. The project, laser communicator, uses electromagnetic waves to transfer information without direct connection between the input and output devices. This project will also investigate how the sound waves are transmitted as electrical and light signals through a transistor radio, a transformer, a laser pointer, and a solar photoresistor. This project will employ the concepts of electromagnetism and sound waves. A transformer, which will be connected between the battery, and the laser pointer, will act as a modulator to control the voltage. As the sound is input via an audio device, sound energy will be converted as electrical impulses. These impulses will be converted to light signals through a laser beam. When the light energy is transmitted to the photoresitor by the laser pointer, the energy produced by the light will be converted into the electric signals which will power the output device. This idea is applied in space where laser beam such as infrared light is employed as the major source for data transmission.…

Wireless power transmission is the transmission of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical load without man-made conductors. Wireless transmission is useful in cases where interconnecting wires are inconvenient, hazardous, or impossible. So a study was made on the investigation of wireless power transmission by near-field coupling from the view point of the antennas. Mainly the antennas are of two types - dipole and loop antennas – and were used as the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna for electrical near-field coupling and for magnetic near-field coupling, respectively. The relationships among the power-transmission efficiency and the antennas ' geometries, the antennas ' electrical sizes, the impedance matching of the antennas, and the ohmic losses in the antennas and the impedance-matching circuits were clarified. This technology has been widely applied, from the wireless charging of electronic devices to huge projects, such as the solar-power satellite system. The most important challenge is to maintain higher power-transmission efficiency over longer transmission distances which was strictly defined as the ratio of the received power at the receiving antenna and the input power at the transmitting antenna. Several observations were obtained, demonstrating the influence on the power-transmission efficiency of the impedance matching and ohmic losses in the wireless power-transmission system associated with near-field coupling. A wireless power-transmission system was numerically analysed by using canonical methods, including a dipole system and a loop system, the relationships among the power-transmission efficiency and the antenna geometries, distance between antennas, sizes and ohmic losses in the antennas and matching circuits. These results and observations can provide theoretical insight into…

For three decades, satellite communications have been used for public switched telephone network (PSTN) and video broadcasting applications. However, with daily technology advancements made in society and the requirement for global data connectivity, satellites are increasingly being used to provide data communication links at all data rates ranging from 64 Kbps to 155 Mbps (Buchsbaum). Wireless technology allows data to be sent out into space to a satellite and back to earth to provide connectivity among many different network clients. The network can be designed to reach geographically remote sites, where installing land-based lines is not feasible. The only restriction is that the footprint of the satellite must match the area it covers. Satellite networks can use either Ku-band satellites, which use a 3-meter dish (this type of satellites used most commonly for cable television broadcasting) transmitting at 1 GHz, or Ka-band satellites, which uses a 1-meter dish (used less commonly for television broadcasting) transmitting at 2.5 to 3.5 GHz (Shelly).…

    1. Theoretical Background It is known that electromagnetic energy also associated with the propagation of the electromagnetic waves. We can use theoretically all electromagnetic waves for a wireless power transmission (WPT). The difference between the WPT and communication systems is only efficiency. The Maxwell’s Equations indicate that the electromagnetic field and its power diffuse to all directions. Although we transmit the energy in the communication system, the transmitted energy is diffused to all directions. Although the received power is enough for a transmission of information, the efficiency from the transmitter to receiver is quiet low. Therefore, we do not call it the WPT system. Typical WPT is a point-to-point power transmission. For the WPT, we had better concentrate power to receiver. It was proved that the power transmission efficiency can approach close to 100%. We can more concentrate the transmitted microwave power to the receiver aperture areas with taper method of the transmitting antenna power distribution. Famous power tapers of the transmitting antenna are Gaussian taper, Taylor distribution, and Chebychev distribution. These taper of the transmitting antenna is commonly used for suppression of sidelobes. It corresponds to increase the power transmission efficiency. Concerning the power transmission efficiency of the WPT, there are some good optical approaches in Russia[5][6]. Future suitable and largest application of the WPT via microwave is a Space Solar Power Satellite (SPS). The SPS is a gigantic satellite designed as an electric power plant orbiting in the Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO). It consists of mainly three segments; solar energy collector to convert the solar energy into DC (direct current) electricity, DC-to-microwave converter, and large antenna array to beam down the microwave power to the ground. The first solar collector can be…

The purpose of this experiment was to create a more energy efficient and long range way to transmit energy over a distance while, at the same time, not taking up too much space. Wireless power transfer is already being used in many different devices like charger pads for small devices and electric toothbrushes. If this same process of inductive coupling could be reproduced on a larger scale then an entire home could be powered by one central generator. Electronics that previously had to be tethered to a certain area with a power cord could then move freely around an area. Contactless electricity would enable laptops to be moved…

Wireless power is the transmission of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical load without a conductive physical connection. Wireless transmission is useful in cases where interconnecting wires are inconvenient, hazardous, or impossible. The problem of wireless battery charger differs from that of wireless telecommunications, such as radio. In the latter, the proportion of energy received becomes critical only if it is too low for the signal to be distinguished from the background noise. With wireless power, efficiency is the more significant parameter. A large part of the energy sent out by the generating plant must arrive at the receiver or receivers to make the system economical. The most common form of wireless battery charger is carried out using direct induction followed by resonant magnetic induction.…

We live in a world of technological advancement. New technologies emerge each and every day to make our life simpler. Despite all these, we still rely on the classical and conventional wire system to charge our everyday use low power devices such as mobile phones, digital camera etc. and even mid power devices such as laptops. The conventional wire system creates a mess when it comes to charging several devices simultaneously. It also takes up a lot of electric sockets and not to mention the fact that teach device has its own design for the charging port. At this point a question might arise. What if a single device can be used to charge these devices simultaneously without the use of wires and not creating a mess in the process?‖ We gave it a thought and came up with an idea. The solution to all these dilemma lies with inductive coupling, a simple and effective way of transferring power wirelessly. Wireless Power Transmission (WPT) is the efficient transmission of electric power from one point to another trough vacuum or an atmosphere without the use of wire or any other substance. This can be used for applications where either an instantaneous amount or a continuous delivery of energy is needed, but where conventional wires are unaffordable, inconvenient, expensive, hazardous, unwanted or impossible. The power can be transmitted using Inductive coupling for short range, Resonant Induction for mid range and Electromagnetic wave power transfer for high range. WPT is a technology that can transport power to locations, which are otherwise not possible or impractical to reach. Charging low power devices and eventually mid power devices by means of inductive coupling could be the next big thing.…
