Winning: the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and Good Habits
Winning Have you ever taken a look at a winner? I mean, really look at them. If you look them in the eyes, study their body language, or pay attention to the way the speak, you’ll notice that everything they do is done in a way that makes them different from everyone else. In The Psychology of Winning, Dr. Denis Waitley defines winning as “one’s own personal pursuit of individual excellence” (8). Winning can be done in any aspect of life: a sport, job, classroom, or even one’s home. Although there are many traits and characteristics that define a winning person, the most important ones include practicing good habits, setting goals, taking action, and having a burning desire to succeed. The first thing that needs to be done in order to win is to be aware of your habits. There are two different types of habits--good and bad ones. Some examples of good habits include: smiling, going to class on time, waking up early, eating healthy food, practicing good study habits, exercising regularly and being honest with yourself and others. On the other hand, examples of bad habits are smoking, procrastinating, drinking alcohol, eating fast food, staying up late, and taking advantage of people. “Habits are powerful factors in our lives,” Stephen Covey writes in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He further supports this idea by explaining that “because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness . . . or ineffectiveness” (46). Everyone has some good habits that they practice as well as bad ones. Good habits are based on principles while bad habits tend to be controlled by addictions. They are things that we do day in and day out, things that define who we are. With that being said, in order to become a winner, you must learn how to control your habits.

    Charles Duhigg in The Power of Habit communicates how habits can transform our lives and change failure to success. In the chapter “Keystone Habits, or The Ballad of Paul O’Neill, ” Duhigg emphasizes the importance of incorporating keystone habits in the everyday routine. The chapter discusses small wins and identifying the difference between a keystone habit and a good habit. A keystone habit tends to cause a chain reaction; in other words, it triggers personal growth in a positive way. An example of a keystone habit was when Paul O’Neill stepped in as CEO of Alcoa and as a result of trying to prevent accidents, due to his value of workers, he created a mental process in which workers started to care more about work and therefore it brought a widespread adjustment that brought the people and the company together. Part of our self-awareness is understanding our Circle of Concern, our range of concern which we have no mental or emotional involvement.     MY first strategy I think is very useful for my college career is one of my own “Setting Priorities”. Setting priorities is as clear as it sounds. This is useful for someone who seems to slack off in urgencies, and give in to less important concerns. For example I would have school, work, and soccer as my main priorities, but I would get distracted playing video games. I than set certain amount of time for my main priorities each week making it a schedule. I would set for school double the amount of class time as homework/studying time off the class. As work goes, it is the same weekly schedule which coordinates with my class meetings. For soccer I would train three times a week two hours a day. I set the time for my training after I’m done or on a break from my school work, and regular work. So after setting my priorities to a schedule I know what my other less urgent concerns are, such as video games, surfing the internet, hanging out a lot with friends. This strategy has helped me set my life to limit on certain things to accomplish and remember what my goals are. For instance, a day I was tired from work and did not want to go to train and started to play video games.
