It is a heteroglot writing that encompasses the very presence of heteroglossia that Bakhtin defines as: “The internal stratification of any single national language into social dialects” (Discourse in the Novel 484). This incorporates…

The very first character that we are introduced to is Eva, now this is the younger and former self of the later introduced Evelyn. The name ‘Eva’ is a Hebrew name which is biblical and means ‘life’ but also ‘God’s grace’. This is very fitting as when Eva is introduced to her foster mother during the war, Lil, she is a very calm, collective and polite young girl, she had been brought up in a high middle class house with wealthy parents of whom taught her well of right and wrong, Eva was a very good Jewish girl and she did everything to stick to the Jewish ways of life even at the young age of which she was sent to England. The name of Eva is even more well fitted as it means ‘life’ and this is something she may have lost if it wasn’t for her parents sending her to England and Lil taking her in. But in the same sense Eva lost the old life that she once lived and became a different, English person due to Lil’s actions and some could argue that she was almost born again. She changed her name to Evelyn and also her birth date to the day she first came to England.…

One of the most tantalizing things about writing is that most people who do it, whether or not they know much about what they are describing or the language they are using, write very similar things. Often one may come across two seemingly unrelated pieces of writing, and be surprised to find that they are overwhelmingly alike. Such is so in the case of M.F.K. Fisher's commentary on the French port of Marseille, and Maya Angelou's description of the small town of Stamps, Arkansas; both passages are extremely similar in their effect of wholly enveloping the reader in the descriptions of the towns, through the respective authors' handling of the resources of language. By using imagery, anecdotes, tone, and other stylistic devices, Fisher and Angelou adeptly convey their collective purpose: to describe their own town in such a way as to make the reader feel, taste and smell all that defines it.…

In the novel Claire of the Sea Light, Edwidge Danticat utilizes Max Ardin Junior and Flore Voltaire’s interactions and relationship to reveal the dominance of wealthy males in Haitian society; however, despite these circumstances, Danticat illuminates the ability for women to empower themselves and find redemption. The consequences of Flore’s rape reflect the sexist nature of society in Haiti that knowingly traps poor and vulnerable women in harmful and violating situations at the favor of rich men. On the other hand, using Flore’s reaction to her rape, Danticat explores the opportunities women have to stand up to the detrimental male power and take their dignity back. Ultimately, the events involving both Max Jr. and Flore allow Danticat to…

What is happiness many may ask such a question but for a young boy named Douglas Spaulding in a novel by Ray Bradbury it seems to be the idea of summer, by definition and it doesn’t matter what happens as long as its summer whether its life death and throughout more death that life but that’s not the point it that Doug seems to stay happy and unlike most kids today he seems to stay happy even without machine and though the death and despair that he sees consistently throughout the novel. Ray Bradbury perfectly portrays the definition of happiness in a young boys eyes by showing how a little bit of imagination some magic and little things in life and make up for anything including death.…
