Indicators of social, economic, and cultural conditions include many churches in this area where many residents participate on a weekly basis. A basketball court was seen on during my survey in which young male adults were engaging in a game and other young men watching. The homes are built close together and they were not maintained well and were in need of repair. In addition, there were two schools in the area without playgrounds and the children were not visible during the daytime. I also noticed numerous bus stops that were covered with benches provided which seem to be the main means of…

It was a typical hot, humid day in my community in the town of Abbeville, Louisiana, Thursday, July 5, 2012. The afternoon was spent driving around, and then sitting in my car observing areas and jotting down observations in the community that surrounds my home. My town is considered a suburb of the greater Lafayette Metropolitan. The 2010 census revealed a population of 7,669 for the town of Abbeville. There are three areas that were found to be most in need, they are in order of importance: public safety, education and senior care.…

An old black and white photograph, of what looks to be a town or community nestled in a valley of mountains, is weathered and damaged. In the photograph, over a dozen buildings are scattered across a small piece of land; what looks to be the equivalent of about four blocks in today’s terms. A railroad runs through the middle of the town, disappearing into the mountains beyond. The land is bare. There are no trees on this land aside from the ones outlining the town. The buildings are cabin like and made of wood. There are a few barns and some bigger buildings that could have been trading posts or a type of storage building. Two of the buildings at the bottom of the photograph look the same. They have one glass pane window on one side, which can help you to imagine how small these are. Both houses are fenced in. They also have porches and chimneys.…

The area has both middle class and upper class areas. In the middle class areas, the houses are older cape cod and ranch houses. In the upper class areas, there are colonial, split level and large modern homes. Some of the older homes in the area are Tudor style. The area is very well kept with no abandoned structures and the streets are clean and neat. One thing that is missing is there are no sidewalks except on main thoroughfares, which creates a danger. The terrain contains a lot of hills. Some houses have backyards that have a steep drop off. There are wooded areas consisting of evergreen trees, oak and other large trees, and…
