Windshield Survey
My Windshield Survey took place in Brick Township, New Jersey in May 2013. Brick is a fairly large, somewhat densely populated community in Ocean County. I would characterize Brick overall as clean, prosperous, safe and growing. Areas of concentration for this study, with a healthcare focus, are as follows:
1. Community vitality
2. Indicators of social and economic conditions
3. Health resources
4. Environmental conditions related to health
5. Social functioning
6. Attitude toward healthcare
Community Vitality
Brick Township appears to be largely middle-class with some lower middle class areas. Residential areas are populated predominately with single-family homes or condominium developments. The overwhelming majority of these homes appear to be well maintained with cars in comparable condition. In the course of my survey, done during one weeknight and one weekend day, there seems to be active, engaged residents tending to their homes and their day-to-day business. During this time I saw no evidence of homelessness or overt poverty in both business and residential areas. I have no reservations as characterizing Brick as a healthy, vital community.
Indicators of Social and Economic Conditions
Shopping areas for Brick are many and varied. All manner of stores, ranging from neighborhood markets to national corporations are well represented. Brick is situated off of two major highways (Route 70 and 88) and two main roads cutting through town (CR 528 & 549), and as such both mini-malls and major shopping center are prevalent throughout the town. Most of these businesses appear to be prosperous, with considerable foot traffic and an automotive presence in the parking lots. In terms of education, Brick is also well represented with both public and private schools. There are also multiple parks and fields (some directly connected to the schools) with well-kept grounds, crossing guards, bus stops and no graffiti I observed. My observations lead me to

Hanston Township is a little, countryside town that had the arrival of new people in the community. The residents have an extensive history in Hanston and are very acquainted with one another. The town lacked diversity until the new residents began to move there. Hanston has to make some accommodations in order to keep up with the changes that are occurring quickly. The good news is that it is possible to repair a damaged windshield. However, repairs depend on a number of other factors too.…
