Williams Vs Gaye
Great choice of an example Lea. Something similar happened just in the past two years. Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were sued by Marvin Gaye's family. The claim that Blurred Lines came from Gaye's song "Got to Give it Up". Gaye's family received $7.2 million after a ruling by seven jurors. This article on the lawsuit actually even mentions Michael Bolton's lawsuit as well. Gaye's family won the suit due to owning the rights to the sheet music of "Got to Give it Up" and with the help of some

In Skokie, Illinois Frank Collin wanted to march in the Village of Skokie, Illinois. Skokie had the most Jewish residents per capita in the United States at the time. His political views are representing the National Socialist Party of America because he was a regional leader of the organization. Frank Collin was eventually granted permission to march by the seventh United States circuit court of appeals by the ruling, “1st amendment is King”. The court also determined that the government couldn’t restrict expression because of a message, idea, subject matter, or content. In the case of Collin vs. Smith, I disagree with the ruling of the seventh US circuit court of appeals.…

I represent the band and it’s management of “Fits Like a Glove” to be used in an adult incontinence ad campaign. In our licensing agreement, Because the ad has the opportunity to make over $5,000,000, the band would require an upfront cost of $3,000,000 to pay off its recent debts from their most recent tour. Half of all profits after the first $5,000,000 is to be payed to the band and its management. Additionally, the originally recorded song from the band may not be used; instead a third party band chosen, but approved by the original artists, and paid for by the adult diaper corporation will create a new recording to “Fits Like a Glove” for the commercials. No stores selling the product will be allowed to play the audio of “Fits Like a…

The authors Jonathan Haidt and Cornel West are two authors that in fact happen to both be professors at major colleges that somewhat recently have written the works The Righteous Mind and “The Moral Obligations of Living in a Democratic Society”. A lot of similarities are found between the two authors; one of them being that their works are based generally about calling to action for change in America in how it functions but they do differ in the way they deliver their logic or reasoning. The intellect these authors have is incredible and both do a wonderful job in expressing how they feel.…

Another interesting story that was brought to my attention from the movie was how Oprah Winfrey was sued after her episode about mad cow disease. She stated that she would never eat beef again, and was sued for it by a ranch in Texas that citied the disparagement law. The law came about from Alar, which is a pesticide used on apples. Consumer groups were attacking the product because they felt it was unsafe and were scared, this led PR to…

Marvin Gaye has made a long lasting impact on music, without him who knows if R&B would have the same sound or if many of the artist he wrote for would be famous at all. Marvin Gaye has been called, “The number-one purveyor of soul music” (Classic Motown). Davis quotes Michael Dyson describing Gaye as someone “…who transcended the boundaries of rhythm and blues as no other performer had done before” (Ritz 121). He paved the way for many artists of this time, so much even after his death people are trying to copyright his music. “Got to Give It Up” was the name of the song that Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams committed copyright infringement on with their song “Blurred Lines”. The song made “$17 million, of which over $5.6 million went to…

In post-reconstruction America, many Black writers, ministers, teachers and others eloquently argued on behalf of freedom and justice for Black Americans, advocating various strategies for achieving racial and economic equality. Two such leaders who helped shape the political discourse were Ida B. Wells and Booker T. Washington. Urging politically divergent approaches, they both wanted African American people and men in particular, to be valued and respected by the white south. However, they differed significantly in the means by which they believed such change would come about. Ida B. Wells told the truth in a way that made many whites uncomfortable, addressing lynching and other racially motivated atrocities directly and proposing that African Americans collectively leverage economic power through strikes and boycotts, and individually protect themselves from lynches with weapons. In contrast, Washington was more conciliatory, appealing to whites to give African Americans the opportunity to prove their technical capacity and participate alongside whites as legitimate economic partners. While the “gradualist” gained unprecedented access to formal political power through his white benefactors, I believe Ida B. Wells’ argument that African Americans stop conceding power to whites was more persuasive in advancing racial equality for African Americans in post-reconstruction America.…
