* Fish- Channel Catfish, May 23, 1997. It is slender, with a deeply forked tail. The young have spots that fade away with age. It feeds on animal and plant material by using it’s whiskers. * Fossil- Crinoid, June 16, 1989. It is the mineralization of an animal which has a plant-like appearance, so it is known as the “sea lily.” * Mineral- Galena, July 21, 1967. It is the major source of lead ore. It is dark gray in color and breaks into small cubes. * Rock- Mozarkite, July 21, 1967. It appears in a variety of colors, mostly green, red, or purple. It is often made into jewelry. * Grape- Norton/Cynthiana, July 11, 2003. It is an adaptable, self-pollinating grape that has been cultivated since the 1830s. * Amphibian- American Bullfrog, June 5, 2005. It is the largest frog native to Missouri and can be found in every county. * Flower- Hawthorn Blossom , March 16, 1923. The flowers are white and grow in bunches. It is most common in Southern Missouri. * Tree- Flowering dogwood, June 20, 1955. It’s small is size, not usually growing over 40 feet. Sprouts greenish-yellow flowers in clusters. * Aquatic Animal- Paddlefish, May 23, 1997. The Mississippi, Missouri, and the Osage are the only rivers to support the paddlefish. They can reach five feet or more in length and weigh 60 pounds. * Insect- Honeybee, July 3, 1985. It is yellow or orange and black in color. Collects nectar and pollen from flowers to produce honey. * Bird- Native blue bird (Sialia sialis) became official state bird on March 30, 1927. It only reaches about 7 inches with it’s upper parts a shade of blue and it’s underside a rusty color. * Tree Nut- Black walnut tree, July 9, 1990. The meat of the nut is used in ice cream, baked goods, and candies. The shell is used in metal cleaning and polishing, and oil well drilling. * Dinosaur- Hypsibema missouriense, July 9, 2004. It is a type of Hadrosaur or “duck billed”
