Why I Would Be a Good Nurse
Why I Would Be a Good Nurse
Caring for a patient’s needs is the most important quality that any practical nurse should have. When a patient sees and feels that the nurse cares about them, immediately the patient starts building a trust relationship with that nurse. By building this trust the patient most likely will discuss its health problems with the nurse. Since the objective part of treatment is held by patient telling its nurse about the symptoms he or she faces, the trust is a must for patient to be able to discuss it with its nurse. In addition a good practical nurse should also be a good listener. A nurse should ensure that its patient is being heard and acknowledge. Also a nurse should acknowledge any improvement in its patient’s health, and reward the patient for any participation that he or she takes towards its health improvement. For example when a nurse sees that its patients exercised and watched his or her diet in order to lower its blood pressure or cholesterol, the nurse should reward them by making a positive comment to them. In addition, a good nurse should take their time to review its patient’s health history and their present history in regular bases. A good nurse will take some extra time to research about some health condition that its patient is going through. And a good nurse will keep in touch with its patient’s family and inform them about the patient’s health in regular bases if it’s ok with the patient. Finally a good nurse will respect its patient’s situation and have patience while he or she is in process of recovering. Therefore caring for patients needs some specific qualities that a nurse should have, and I believe I have those qualities.
My friends always tell me that I am a trustworthy person, so they tend to share secretive “stuff” with me, or when they just need someone to talk to. Along with trustworthy comes good listening skills. Being a good listener, of course, is one of the main things that a person or a nurse should

Each patient should be given the best quality of care regardless of race, lifestyle, religious belief, or disability. They must also be advocates for their patients by encouraging them to be active in their own care in order to maintain life, health, and well-being. Nursing is not just a job, but much more than that. Nursing requires compassion, trust, empathy, honesty, knowledge, and commitment. According to the American Nurses Association (2010) nursing is defined as, “the pivotal health care profession, highly valued for its specialized knowledge, skill, and caring in improving the health status of the public and ensuring safe, effective, quality care”. I believe nursing is a profession that builds relationships with the patient, family, doctors, and staff by being a patient advocate, respecting others cultural, moral, and spiritual beliefs, and using critical thinking skills to ensure the patient has the best possible outcome.…

Nursing at its core is caring, empathy, honesty, trust, communication and respect. I believe the fundamental core of nursing is caring. If you cannot give of yourself to others you are missing the essence of nursing. “In 2003 the ANA stated that an essential feature of professional nursing is the provision of a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing” (as cited in Meyer & Lavin, 2005, para. 1). Another fundamental core of nursing is respect. The nurse must have respect for the patient and their beliefs. Without this basic respect there will remain a lack of trust on the patient’s part to divulge necessary information that can facilitate their recovery. Listening encompasses both verbal and nonverbal communication between the patient and nurse. Developing a relationship based on trust helps foster communication between the patient and nurse. Listening helps identify issues that can hinder the accomplishment of goals that have been set for the patient’s recovery. Jean Watson’s Caring Theory is comprised of ten carative factors that can foster a caring relationship between the patient and the nurse. According to Chantal Cara (A Pragmatic View, Introduction, para. 2) “upholding Watson’s caring theory not only allows the nurse to practice the art of caring, to provide compassion to ease patients’ and families’ suffering, and to promote their healing and dignity but it can also…
