Why I Wanted to Pursue a Master’s Degree in Business Administration

The decision to pursue an MBA was a process that started in 1998. At that time, I was newly married and had been a Physical Therapist for eight years. I have experienced working in various settings, but what I discovered was that not one setting had all the attributes that I wanted in order to sustain my interest until retirement.
Working in a hospital or acute care setting is good academically. I was able to have plenty of face time with the physicians and even had the opportunity to observe orthopedic surgeries. Unfortunately, hospitals tend to pay the least among the employment settings for PT’s. I found also that it was difficult to advance professionally because the places where I have worked do not have a career ladder, or there was no room for promotion since the incumbents have no plans on leaving their position.
Long-term care facilities generally offer more by way of salary. Places that I have worked also allow for flexibility in schedule so that I didn’t have to lose time off if I had to go to an appointment. There is also a clear career ladder for those who want to advance. The pace, however, is a little too slow for me. I needed constant mental stimulation which I never found in long-term care.
Outpatient and home care were also options that only worked for a short time. Also, physical therapy is a very physically demanding job. I just couldn’t see myself in my 50’s or 60’s still trying to get patients out of bed and teaching them how to walk. Thus, I decided that if a management position in healthcare was not in my future, I would have to go into a different career altogether.
I started considering other career choices when an opportunity to move into an administrative position presented itself. I was

Thereafter I wanted to complete the Administrator-In-Training program hours at my current job Elkins Crest Nursing Home. In the final analysis, I hoped to become an Administrator or an Assistant Administrator for Extendicare Health Services within the next two years. Long-term care, VA hospitals, and community/public health systems may be different in the patients that they treat, but overall they are fairly similar. The top priority of all three organizations is to care for their patients and stakeholders, and staff performance has to be top priority for the management team of any one of those three organizations. Long-term care usually requires more staff to care for the patients who are 65 or older, and in declining health therefore requiring a bigger management team usually consisting of a Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Medication Aides, and Certified Nurse Assistants just for direct care to a patient. There is also the dietary department that makes meals for the patients, and if therapy is needed there are more people involved as well such as representatives for Medicare or Medicaid insurance since most elderly people are covered under one or both. Imagine having all of these people working for one patient, this is what happens in long-term care. Many people working as a unit to help individual patients. Most long-term care facilities are privately owned, and employ anywhere from a few people up to hundreds of people.…

I believe that I may look further into this as a career option for myself. I never had an interest in the role of a nurse nor the patience for eight years of (expensive) schooling plus a residency. This career finds the happy medium between the two, and has opportunities in numerous specialities. In addition to this, there is also the high demand for physician assistants and an extremely high satisfaction rate. I have to admit, that is much more than I…

I have struggled through many years trying to find the perfect career I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I wanted to do a career in the health care field because I knew it would always be a field that would be around and always in demand. When interviewing Dennis Brown, a Registered Respiratory Therapist, he stated, “I had always been interested in the medical profession, and the coursework provided me with the flexibility to choose another medical profession if I found respiratory care was not what I believed it to be.”(Brown). It hadn’t occurred to me until I was talking with Brown that I could use my background and degree to go into other medical fields if I felt the respiratory field wasn’t the one for me.…
