Why I Want to Attend Graduate School
I would like to Attend Capella University’s Masters Program in School Counseling. I have always known that I wanted to work with children ever since I can remember. Working with children is something that I have always enjoyed doing even if it was tutoring, or just being around them. The reason I want to receive my Master’s Degree in School Counseling is to become a Guidance Counselor. Being a guidance counselor you can make a difference in a child’s life, whether it’s talking to them about their grades, peer pressure, or any of the things that children of all ages go through in school and in life.

The moment I knew I wanted to be a guidance counselor was at the age of 14, and attending middle school. I can remember my guidance counselor talking to me about my grades, what I needed to improve in, helping me choose high schools to attend, and many other things. I think that the help I received from her put me on the path to working with children. When I entered high school there was no doubt in my mind what I wanted to attend college for. I will never forget my guidance counselor in high school her name was Ms. Price. She helped with all the things you needed to get through in school such as passing statewide testing, filling out college applications, discussing issues that I had questions about, and even my personal life.

I then attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC where I earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Child and Family Development. College is where I really got hands on experiences with children. Being that I majored in education I had to do numerous practicum experiences. The first one I can remember doing was at a child a development center at a church. I worked with the 4 year old class and it was the best experience ever. I helped out with creating activities, teaching lessons, dramatic play and much more. Looking at the children and seeing the joy just made me want to work with children even more. During My senior year I had to do an

As one that enjoys helping others, I have to constantly remind myself change can be stressful and many times fear of the unknown can make us second guess our decisions. However, I know everything I have endured in the last couple of years will make me a better school counselor and it all will be worth it. I believe every child should have an opportunity to receive an education and if we want the world to change, we must help others succeed and receive an education. Becoming a school counselor is a life dream of mine. As an undergrad student, I completed my course work in elementary education because in the State I was living in it required you to have two years of classroom instruction in order to be a school counselor. At that time I was unable to do my student teaching because of family obligations and took my degree in another program. Now that my children are older and decisions I make in life are more about what makes me happy, I’m determined to get my degree in school counseling. Not only do I look forward to working with children and helping them with their concerns, I’m also looking forward the work days as well as the vacation days. In order to assist others we as school counselors must also take care of our well-being to, something I don’t get a chance to do that often working in social services. I look forward collaborating with everyone, learning new theories and processes to making…

Throughout high school, I had always envisioned myself in attending Texas A&M. There are still some extra steps I need to take but I know what my goals are and I’m going to do whatever it takes to achieve them. I know it’s not going to be simple but not impossible. My parents came to this country to work hard and better their lives for my brothers and me. My dad works too hard seven days a week and I look at how tired he is all the time. I want to be able to go to school, pursue my dreams, obtain my dream job and help other people. I want my parents to see that them working so hard and coming to America and leaving their entire family was worth it. I want to witness the happiness in my dads face when I walk across that stage at Texas A&M.…

I am passionate about the treatment we can provide to help these young children overcome what they are going through or have been through. Children are the future and it is our job to make sure that they have the tools to reach their fullest potential in life. By giving them a safe environment and people they can trust and express what they are feeling. Working with young adults and children can be very rewarding, and I discovered my abilities to adapt and relate. Coaching teenagers have given me more opportunities to not just teaching them how to play volleyball but also daily life advice. Being only twenty-two years old coaching and working with children it is easy to relate to some children but not all. They all go through so many different things that I may not have gone through growing up. The young girls I coach are not just there to learn from me they are also teaching me by how to respond to a person when they need someone to turn to. Their lives right now are like an emotional roller coaster because of the changes children are going through every day and plus hormones. I would appreciate the opportunity to become a student at your university to develop my inherent strengths and interest into a successful and fulfilling a career in clinical mental health counseling and transform my personal goals into reality. It would be an honor to have the privilege to continue my education at Lewis…

I always kind of wanted to do it, but as a real young kid I just didn’t know the word “counselor.” I knew I always wanted to help people and as I got older I knew that I wanted to walk alongside them as they were on their personal journey. I knew I could not change them, and I didn’t want to. I wanted to give them an opportunity to be heard. I wanted to give them the space to feel like they mattered. It was probably late elementary school, around fifth grade that I…

As I reflect on what I have learned over the last five weeks, I find my personal philosophy of counseling being based on one main theme that I repeatedly saw in different readings; it is our duty to do what is in the best interest of the child. When I think about my reasons for wanting to pursue this career, I naturally feel it is because of my love for children; but more than that, I want to help foster the feeling that each and every student can be anything they want to be if they put their mind to it.…

Each individual has his own reason for pursuing a graduate degree. Professionally, a graduate degree shows that the person has the motivation, ambition, and dedication to improve and thus strive to obtain a position in which he/she can apply and expand his knowledge base. Many perceive a graduate degree as a status symbol, an opportunity for advancement, or even a cause for more money. The choice to seek additional education after investing four years in an undergraduate degree shows commitment to learning and recognition of self-worth. I chose to pursue a Master’s degree for two reasons; to obtain a higher learning level of education and to eventually increase my annual salary. The first, and most important, reason for my wanting to pursue a Master’s degree is to obtain a higher education level. I believe that obtaining a graduate degree will definitely make me more marketable in the corporate world. My goal is to broaden my horizon beyond the technical world, unlock career aspirations otherwise blocked, and enhance problem-solving and decision-making skills. I am hoping that by pursuing a degree of higher learning, I will pick up enhanced skills that will enable me to be more of an asset to a team once I enter the workforce. I truly believe that without the knowledge, strength and…

Starting at eight years old, I always envisioned attending college and obtaining a degree that would allow me to accomplish what I want in life. Over time, I have faced many obstacles such as dyslexia, emotional trauma, and family challenges. All through these challenges, I never let anything deter me from my course of attending college. Despite being able to overcome obstacles, I have come to realize there are things in life that I have little to no control over. Now that I have had time to experience the joys, hard work, and endless opportunities that come with being a college student, I have come too far to let anything stop me from finishing this chapter of my life. In combination with my scholarships and work-study, as a college student with little money I rely partly on my parents to finance my education. Although my parents will continue to do all they can to help finance my education, their income stability is not guaranteed, my family…
