Why You Shouldn't Drink and Drive
Attenion-Catching Remarks: Every person is accountable for his or her own "right to drink". Failure to treat this or any "right" responsibly has consequences. The person's "right" can and should be taken away when the failure to act responsibly endangers other. Thesis: Today I would like to talk to you about the problems of drinking and driving, and why it is a concern for all of us. Main Point I: I'd like to start off by talking about the penalties of drinking and driving. Did you know that drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime? A chronic drunk driver is a person who has driven over 1,000 times before being caught. They do not respond to social pressures, law enforcement, and the messages that have been combined to reform the drinking and driving behavior of our society. Given the highly disproportionate role that these people play in drunk driving incidents, injuries, and fatalities, it would be wise to put our focus on them. The chronic drunk drivers comprise only a small percentage of all the drivers, yet they cause the most accidents. Studies have found that 21 to 34 year olds make up approximately half of all the drunk drivers that are in alcohol-related fatal accidents. They are also responsible for more fatal accidents than any other age group, and seem to have the highest blood alcohol content. This is where the biggest problem is, considering that they are resistant to change their drinking patterns and behavior. About a third of all drivers arrested for DWI's are repeat offenders according to data gathered in 13 states. Every single injury and death caused by a drunk driver is totally preventable. Know your limit! If you are not sure what your limit is experiment at home with a responsible person. Most people find that they can drink about one drink per hour without any ill effects. It is illegal for a bar or restaurant to serve an intoxicated person in all but four states. Nearly three out of four (about 72%) of the

Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash. All of this preventable! In 2010 about 2,700 teens in the United States aged 16–19 were killed and almost 282,000 were treated and released from emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor-vehicle crashes, Wow! In a recent year, people aged 16 to 24 were involved in 28 percent of all alcohol-related driving accidents, although they make up only 14% of the U.S. population.Young people are also over-represented in drinking driver injuries and deaths.Fortunately, driving accidents have been declining among young people, just as they have among the general population. And deaths associated with young drinking drivers (those 16 to 24 years of age) are down dramatically, having dropped 47% in a recent 15-year period.…

Driving under the Influence is a dangerous trend and is known to cause many critical accidents and deaths which could have been easily prevented. Even though the consequences for DUI arrests are strict, they seem to not be effective enough. The toll of alcohol-related deaths, repeated offenders, and accidents is still rising, leaving the streets dangerous and families devastated. Over half the drivers arrested for drunk driving in the nation, are repeated offenders. I stand strongly against drunk drivers; They are a threat to themselves and society and believe that they should be taught a tough lesson when caught. Therefore, the charges for Driving Under the Influence laws need to be more severe. In the following paper I will present numerous reasons, followed by examples as to why the DUI laws should be increased, starting with statistics and tolls of alcohol-related deaths.…

Consequences of drunk driving are vast. The worst of them being killing of the innocent. Teenage drunk drivers put themselves and every other person on the road in danger. A teenager’s body is not usually immune to alcohol as well as adults. While intoxicated, teens take less risk and are much less cautious. In order to drive safely, the driver must be alert, quick, and capable to make decisions all the while executing them. Alcohol leads to loss of coordination, poor judgment, slow reflexes, and blurred vision. All of these things are required for driving safely. Teenagers jump behind the wheel of a vehicle without thinking. There are even cases in which best friends have killed each other due to driving drunk. On May 25, 2006 Jessica Rashdall, an eighteen year old, killed her best friend. The two were on their way home from a nightclub where they had been drinking. Within the next hour Laura Gorman was dead on a Florida highway. Rashdall served four years in prison even though it was an accident. Rashdall once shared a strong bond with her best friend’s family; now the Gorman’s blame Jessica for the loss of their loved one.…

“Have one drink for the road” was, until recently, a commonly used phrase in American culture. It has only been within the past 20 years that as a nation, we have begun to recognize the dangers associated with drunk driving (Sutton 463). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this year 519,000 people, or one person per minute, will be injured in alcohol-related accidents. 10,839 people will die in drunk-driving crashes this year – that is one death every 50 minutes. The heartbreaking part is, every injury and lost life due to driving after drinking can be prevented. Drinking while driving “accidents” are not merely “accidents.” Getting in a vehicle after consuming alcohol, which severely affects the function of the brain, is not an accident. It is lack of responsibility. Individuals that consume alcohol irresponsibly must begin to take responsibility for themselves and for other innocent drivers on the road. Unfortunately, in spite of great progress, alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious national problem that tragically affects many victims annually (Hanson). It is time that laws and consequences for drinking while driving strengthen and people begin to think twice before driving a vehicle after drinking. Individuals who make the decision to drive after consuming alcohol, not only put themselves in a dangerous situation, they also put an entire community at risk. Current laws, which are not strict or powerful enough, must be increased in order to keep our neighborhoods around the nation safe. Although many people think current drinking while driving limits and laws are strict enough, the rising number of individuals who continue to make an irresponsible decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after consuming alcohol, make it imperative that current legal limits, laws, and consequences for drinking while driving, be increased in order to punish drivers appropriately and help repair communities, relationships, and, most…

There are countless facts and statistics on the dangers of drinking and driving and the effect it has had and is continuing to have on society. Drunk driving is blight on our civilization. “An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related deaths” (Injury Prevention). The fact that there are so many alcohol related deaths is beyond me. Someone’s life should not be taken due to the carelessness and irresponsibility of another human being If someone is going to consume more alcohol than the legal limit then they should not be anywhere near any working motorized vehicle. Not only for the safety of those around them, but also for the safety of the intoxicated person themselves. Drunk driving is an enormous public safety issue, which can cause more deaths around the world. “The highest drunk driving rates are from the ages 18 to 25” (Top). Considering the legal drinking age is set at 21, there should be no reason why there is alcohol related accidents caused by those under the age of 21. Alcohol can cause adolescents under the influence to drive more aggressively and thus more dangerous. Alcohol slows down their reaction time and causes them to be less likely to prevent…

In America there are 233 billion trips in cars each year. Out of those, every two thousand trips are taken by those who are driving under the influence of alcohol or better known as DUI (MADD, 2014). An estimate of one-third of DUI cases that end in crashes, deaths, arrests, and injuries, comes from repeated offenders. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in 2012 about 29.1 million people admitted to driving under the influences of alcohol, that’s more than the population of Texas. Driving under the influence is the cause of dangerous roads in America.
