Have you ever been walking into a store and a pungent smell slaps you across the face? You turn around only to see that someone is smoking a cigarette. Have you ever wondered the affects that smoking would cause? How would smoking affect a person’s appearance and health? Have you ever wondered just how many people smoke worldwide?
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), about 43.8 million US adults (21.6 percent of men and 16.5 percent of women) or 1 out of 5 adults 18 and older, are smokers. Each year as the number of smokers grows, so does the number of smoking related illnesses. (www.cancer.org) Smoking affects a person’s outer appearance in a negative manner. They often have yellow teeth, bad breath, yellow fingernails, early skin aging, and hair loss.
Chemicals from the cigarette can stain your hands and alter the conditions in your mouth to cause bad breath and tooth decay. Smoking accelerates hair loss and the formation of wrinkles. In fact, a group of scientists found that smokers have 10 times more wrinkles than a nonsmoker does. When they smoke, they will not only make themselves look a lot older, but also feel a lot older too. Moreover, smoking has been shown to cause moodiness.
The Archives of General Psychiatry (phys.org) declared that after following more than 1,000 smokers and non-smokers over five years, they noticed that the smokers were twice as likely as the non-smokers to suffer from major depression. As you can see, smoking can definitely negatively affect your outer appearance. Additionally, smoking is a great concern to many health problems. The U.S. World Health Organization found from a study that 1,205 Americans died each day from smoking.
