It’s the most fun, most competitive, team-oriented sport in the earth. We would do anything to win a game. Ladies love us guys want to be us. Everybody loves the game, people are always playing it, it is the soul of the universe. When you put on the pads, lace up the spikes, and buckle your helmet you walk onto the field and nothing else matters. You will forget if you failed a test, fought with a friend, or lost some money…. Because for the next few hours your day will be perfect. Here’s to touchdowns, field goals, extra points, fumbles, dropped passes, amazing catches, monster hits, interceptions, overtimes, come from behind wins, close games, broken bones, warm days, cold afternoons, rivalries, pick-up games, gallons of Gatorade, endless hours of practice, coaches, teammates, friends, let downs, miracles, but most of all the game, Football, Why? Why do we run back and forth day after day? Hitting and running so hard we ache everywhere. Pushing it so hard we listen to our hearts beat rings in our head, while our lungs desperately gasp for air. Early mornings, late nights, Saturdays and Sundays, endless mistakes, deep bruises, broken bones, and torn muscles and ligaments. We hustle thru it all. Because we live off our adrenaline, because the game frees your soul, because the party after the big win is spectacular, because you are invincible once you step onto the field. A big play could make you smile all day long. The rattling of the crowd, the feel of the ball, the image of the spikes in the dirt, it’s a glory to live by. Because it is possible to hustle hard enough you can leave your worries behind. Sweat is the cologne of our accomplishments, Why? Why should anyone push themselves so hard? Its not for the money, it’s not for the girls, its not for bragging rights, and its not for the fame. We do it because we love it.

In the case of the film, this was football (as told, obviously, by the title). But, the passion for ‘Mojo’ football, as they call it, is overzealous and amped up. The characters are often shown being confronted by members of their community and always reminded about how they should go undefeated and win State. According to Frank Jing-Horng Lu, who studied the pressures and stress put on college athletes, “they face harsh and weighty demands, such as repetitive and exhausting training, frequent travels and competitions, injuries, pressures to win and avoid losses, internal competitions between teammates, media pressures, and sometimes burnout” (Lu 1). Like other football teams, the film shows the intense practices the players go through, whilst getting interviewed by the media in the middle of it. There’s a heightened sense of pressure on these players in the film that reflects on the real life pressures placed on young athletes. Coach Gaines likes to end his speeches at practices with “Can you be perfect?” While he’s one of the more empathetic adult characters in the film, this is still a question that haunts the young players. In comparison with the athletes that Lu studied, he states that they “are a unique group on campus who may face a variety of stressors and challenges compared to their non-athlete counterparts because of their social environments” (Lu 1).
