Why we eat what we eat. (To Third Graders)
Hey third graders, I’m Shambrey Halton. Today I’m writing this blog to you to talk about how your friends and family, your mind, the internet, the government, and science have an effect on your eating habits. The reason I’m bringing this up to you is because our class is finding out why we eat what we eat. If you read this blog you will already know about what’s going on once you get to high school. How do your friends, family, and your lifestyle have an effect on why you eat what you eat? Your family might only eat certain foods on holidays or special occasions. For example my family only eats turkey on Thanksgiving, and only eats ham for Christmas. Now on to your friends, they can also influence food choices and eating habits. You tend to feel a little peer pressure when eating around your friends. I remember when I went to Happy Mexican with my friends. They had been before so they knew what they wanted, but this was my first time. They all ordered the taco salad and I was going to order some nachos, but when they ordered I realized I had never had that before, so I ordered it too. I should’ve gone with my first thought because once I got it I didn’t like it. The point of the story is my friends peer pressured me to choose the taco salad, and I didn’t even like it. Psychology has to do with your mind and how you think. In this process you have to know the difference between appetite and hungry. Your appetite is when your mind tells you to eat something. When you’re hungry it means you need or must have food. Many of thoughts and feelings are based on memories of your experiences. For example, I remember when I was little, every thanksgiving my family got together at my aunt’s house. We have dinner and sit around and joke about old memories of my grandparents and everybody else. A lot of the time I wouldn’t be hungry, but once I step through the door I ran straight to the kitchen,because I smelled all that food. Psychology affects why you eat as well as what you eat. Food can please the senses and help you meet your need for social contact. Psychology even plays a role in food preparation. Cooking a meal that tastes and looks good can give a person a psychological lift and make them want to eat it, even when their not hungry. Food scientists and technologists are applying what they know to change the form of certain foods. Depending on how much you use technology, you may have found some side effects. You may have found some side effects like you get bored quickly. Once you get bored you then think you’re hungry and normally go get a snack of some sort. Food technologists are using what they know to affect the nutrient content of the food supply. For example, I like being on the computer when I’m home not doing anything. After so long I got bored and went to the kitchen and start rumbling through the cabinets, trying to find me something to eat. The government has a large impact on the food supply. The government is the way we get food imported from country to country. The two federal agencies the look over the food supply is United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Foods sold within the state where they are produced are controlled by those two agencies. When it comes to food products, customers demand three main qualities. They look for health, convenience, and great tastes. Costumers normally look for products that will reduce their risks of cancer, high blood pressure, and heart disease. For example I like home cooked meals, but I don’t want to spend a lot of time on cooking. Therefore, convenience help bring out new food products. My friend Kianna said she don’t really eat “hot chips” and things like that because it’s not good for her health. She used to wake up in the morning and eat hot chips and drink soda and stuff like that, and started to have heart problems. Therefore, she stopped before it got worst. I’ve basically explain to you the many different way of how you are influenced by food in your everyday life. I’ve also told you why you eat what you. Hope this blog can help you in some type of way and encourage you to stop in your tracks before you get ahead of yourself when it come to your health. Have a nice day you guys and gals.

    David Zinczenko is the editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine and the author of numerous best-selling books. Zinczenko is a man known for his work; his work and credibility shines bright because he has contributed op-ed essays to the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. He has also appeared on Oprah, Ellen, 20/20, and Good Morning America. The fact that he is so accomplished in the area of eating healthy shows just how credible he is when it comes to discussing fast food vs. the eater. Zinczenko believes that the fast food industry is partly at fault for the growing rate of obesity. Although Zinczenko’s background and accomplishments gives us the evidence we need to know in order to trust his judgments, his emotional way of getting his points across make a difference as well. In the beginning of the essay, Zinczenko tells us about himself and how he grew up with troubled parents who weren’t together, and with very little options of what to eat for lunch and dinner every day. He explains that his options were mainly fast food, which caused him to be an overweight teenager. In other words, he uses his story of himself as a teenager growing up with family problems to draw people in and get them to sympathize with the overweight teenagers and get them to see that it is not all their fault and that it is, in fact, partly the fast food industry’s fault. One of his final arguments is that without warning labels on fast food industry products, we will see more sick, obese children and more angry parents.…

    Healthy eating is of great importance as it has a drastic effect on one’s life, and more importantly on the lives of children.
