Why Was Johnny Tremain Wrong
“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Johnny Tremain, a very talented young silver smith living in Boston, dreamed for years of being a master metal crafter. However, one fateful day, Johnny was at work crafting a beautiful piece of priceless china for the one and only John Hancock (the richest man in Boston). As Johnny was toiling away, he requested Dove, one of the assistants, to fetch a tool. As a cruel joke Dove pulled out one with a fractured handle. Inevitably, the piece snapped sending scorching molten silver onto Johnny’s hand, bequeathing it with a tremendous singe and intolerable pain. Lapham to let Johnny go for three reasons: he broke the contract dishonoring his word; he smothered Johnny’s dreams; and he neglected care of his hand. The first reason it was wrong of Mr. Lapham to let Johnny go is he broke the contract dishonoring his word. He broke the contract that he signed with Johnny’s mother, Mr. Lapham promised Mrs. Tremain Johnny would work for him for seven years, and he failed to honor his word. He not only failed to honor his word, but in doing so, he dishonored God. The second reason why it was wrong of Mr. Lapham to let Johnny go is because he smothered Johnny’s dreams. Johnny was extremely talented, extremely passionate, and extremely hopeful of becoming a master silversmith and owning his own shop. For so long Johnny had dreamt of owning his own silver smith shop. The third reason why it was wrong of Mr. Lapham to let Johnny go is that he neglected care of his hand. Later on Johnny ironically discovered a way his hand could be mended (Mr. Lapham could have easily figured a solution much earlier.)
