Introduction are of prime importance in any advanced economy such as ours. They affect us all far more than seems evidenced in our concern about them. Everyone buys wages, in a sense, with every purchase he makes. And three-fourths of all incomes in the United States represent pay for work done in the employ of another. So nearly every one of us is on both sides of the wage exchange, in one way or another. We all know in a general way that wages have been rising for a long time in this country, but there is evidence aplenty that the economic principles which apply to wage problems are not well understood. Probably they are no better understood now than in the early thirties when measures adopted to combat the depression proved to be such colossal failures. Fearing

A main controversial issue in todays society is whether or not to raise minimum wage and how much to raise it by. There comes both benefits and consequences to raising the minimum wage price. In an article written by David Henderson titled, “ Raising the Minimum Wage Will Not Reduce Poverty” Henderson discusses the consequences to raising minimum wage and how it may affect the youth and currently employed. In another related article found on the New York Post by Jonathan M. Trugman titled, “Raising minimum wage would cost a million people their jobs” Trugman confronts, “ The American worker is grossly underpaid, by about 25 percent to 30 percent — heck, wages have been stagnant for almost a decade.” (CITE) According to both David Henderson and Jonathon M. Trugman the consequence of raising minimum wage could amount to thousands to millions of Americans loosing their jobs and becoming unemployed. Though I concede that the minimum wage price should…

Minimum wage has helped shape our economy and nation as it is today. In the United States, we have two different types of minimum wage, federal and state. But what is minimum wage? “Minimum wage is the lowest hourly rate at which most employers may legally pay their workers” (“Federal Minimum Wage”). The federal minimum wage is the government’s minimum wage, but each state also has their own minimum wage. “The first federal minimum wage was legislated to boost wages to ease the hardship of workers and increase the consumer purchasing power needed for job creation and economic recovery” (Berlatsky 79). One of the most controversial issues in today’s world is if the minimum wage should be raised or not. One of the lesser known issues is…

Although the United States has the leading economy in the world, it was in a recession in 2008, and began to slowly emerge from the financial woes of that time in 2009. The United States, at this time has an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics ("Employment Situation," 2014, p. 1), which is a slight decrease from the 6.7 percent rate in March 2014, and a great decrease from the unemployment rate of 10.0 percent in October 2009. This had a direct effect on the inflation rate. In 2004 he inflation rate was 3.3 percent, and reached a high of 4.1 percent in 2007, which is the highest it had been in the previous ten years. As of July 22, 2014 inflation rate was 2.1 percent, which is a vast improvement from the rates listed above, but still not as low as the rate of 0.1 percent in 2008. ("Inflation Rate," 2014, p. 1)…

The history of the minimum wage in this country go back almost 100 years to the great depression and FDR. The arguments for and against the minimum wage go back just as far and tend to be emotionally charged. But does this policy, established during the great depression still make sense today? As the economy enters a new, global, era does the minimum wage help or hurt us? Through a review of arguments both for and against the minimum wage, and a review of the research that supports or disproves those arguments this paper hopes to present a balanced non-emotional look at the minimum wage and present a recommendation for how to approach this issue in the future.…

In recent debates about remuneration, some controversial issues that have been brought up are about the federal minimum wage, and its influence on society. On one hand, some claim that the federal minimum wage is to low, and in fact, needs to be raised so families can earn a living wage, but also help the poor, promote job growth, support workers, and decrease prices on many goods. One advocate of this view is Aaron Pacitti of The Huffington Post who asserts that “Raising the minimum wage is good economic, good policy and good for workers” (Pacitti). Others, such as John Wihbey of the Journalist’s Resource, however, strongly disagree. Wihbey states that “the real effects of minimum-wage increases are negative: they hurt businesses, raise prices…

Why are people not getting paid enough in the United States of America? It’s because of minimum wage and it’s a huge problem in the U.S. right now because more than sixty thousand low-wage worker feel that they are not getting paid enough from their jobs to support their families. Also, full time college students and people with disabilities are paid under the minimum wage. These people have to deal with more problems throughout their daily life because they are earning less money compared to others. Andrew Das in the article, “Pay Disparity in U.S. Soccer? It’s Complicated”, states that U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team is receiving more money than the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team. “According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission five of the top players for the U.S. Women’s National Team accused U.S. Soccer of paying them a quarter of what the men make along with the bonuses” Das explains. Das supports his statement by explaining how much the Men receive and how the bonuses work for the Men’s team vs how much the Women receive and how their bonuses work. First, Das states that according to U.S. Soccer the top women made around 1.2 million while the top Men players made 1.4 million but the top ten Women sometimes make more money…

One way the union has helped us greatly is the making/production of heat/air conditioning in our homes, garages, sheds, cars, etc. Four members of my family own cars: dad, mom, brother, and myself. What would we do without heat and air conditioning? The answer is simple. We would be sweating profusely or freeze to death. However, because of this union, we are all relaxed. We aren’t just relaxed in our cars, we are relaxed in our homes as well. In the winter, I’ve had to wake up several nights to get an extra blanket to pull over me; however, it wasn’t because our…
