On Wednesday, April 7, 2010, I was blessed with the opportunity to sit in on a Mathematical class at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach, Florida. This was an opportunity to observe the function of a core class at the school that I teach and Substitute for. The teacher’s name was Mrs. Minor-Walker, which is one of our 7th grade teachers. When I walked into the classroom, I shook her hand and informed her of what I was intending on doing today. She was more than glad to assist with my assignment. These students were seventh grade students. This was an intermediate class, in which most of these children have encountered some sorts of issues with comprehending Mathematics prior to this year. Due to the…
Many of the students enrolled in our independent study charter school come from a low socioeconomic background and are academic underperformers, especially in mathematics. Most students lack the time and resources to be able to attend school multiple days a week or to spend extra time working with their teachers to improve their lagging mathematics scores. At the same time, many teachers are asked to deliver classroom instruction on mathematics topics that they likely have no specific training or credential in. In addition, these teachers often only have a very limited amount of time to work with each individual student before they must move onto the next. These obstacles make it more difficult for these students to complete the required course load.…
As a tutor I will need to recognise basis skills needs, perhaps through initial pre-course assessment and discuss with the learner a discreet and sensitive referral route to gain appropriate support. I would also need to have the skills and confidence to support my learners to ensure I do not exclude the learners I am trying to reach.…
Is mental strength as important as physical strength? Some people asked this may say no, and some may say yes. I think mental and physical strength are equal in many ways. I think the articles Why We Run by Bernd Heinrich, ¨Confessions of a Doper¨ by Jonathan Vaughters, and other quotes by famous athletes can back me up a little. If anything, maybe they help me go through my own struggles as an athlete.…
I believe that a good way to get student engaged in a session with tutors is the interaction between the tutor and the student. When a student is being tutored it is important that the tutor and student builds a trusting relationship with one another, so that the student is able to engage in the session. Another way to engage students in a tutoring session to build the students confidence, this way the student will be more engaged the learning process. A way in knowing that a student is engaged in a tutoring session how they are able to respond to questions that are being asked and the question that they ask. Interaction during the session say's a lot about how the student reacts to the information that they are receiving.…
I primarily helped teach other students various algebra 1 concepts along with geometry when I could. Being a Freshman tutor, I was limited to those I was able to help but I was able to tutor several students a week and it also helped me reteach myself older concepts I had forgotten. Tutoring for math was a great opportunity for me to aid my classmates and expand others’ understanding of…
I have also spearheaded the development of a program with my co-workers at the math tutoring center. This program would allow students to look through a database of math instructors, and learn about each one’s teaching style, amount of homework generally assigned, student…
I have enjoyed tutoring students through the Literacy Corps for nearly two years. The program has helped push me outside of my comfort zone by leading and teaching students. Without challenging myself, I would never have been able to establish a connection with the many students and teachers in the Syracuse area that I have today. I greatly value these connections and relationships, which have helped further my learning experience in college.…
Through the course of five weeks I have tutored a third grader by the name of Willy one hour each Thursday. Willy is a high-spirited kid who loves to learn. He goes to a school named Corpus Christi, a school I spent my sixth through eighth grade years at, and is also the organization I volunteered for. I chose this particular work because I love working with kids considering I have 4 younger brothers and sisters. This also gave me an opportunity to put my knowledge to good use and to be a good role-model towards Willy. What I gained from this experience is satisfaction from helping a young student cope with his academic struggles and learn to surpass them in order to be successful. I most definitely would do this project again if I had the chance.…
Missouri has an A+ tutoring program which I am a part of. I tutor students in an eighth grade math class, but I focus on helping a specific girl who struggles with her confidence in math. I have enjoyed watching her gain more confidence in her math as I work with her. When all of her homework is done we talk about her life, including her personal struggles and dreams.…

Throughout this course we have studied different theories utilizing the text, class discussions and assignments.…
Seeing how Belmont Hill’s tutoring program works has inspired me to become a peer tutor. Working together with a younger peer on difficult material is a perfect example of academic teamwork at Belmont Hill. Belmont Hill proves how having a tutor is not a bad or embarrassing thing to do, but insteads thinks of it as one of the best move you can make when you are struggling. There are peer tutors for every subject, and they have all already passed the course, so they are very experienced and know what is coming. The case is the same in real life at Belmont Hill and in the book The Boys in the Boat; teamwork makes the dream work. In conclusion, getting extra help should not be an embarrassing thing to do, it should be a responsible move made by a student who is fully devoted to academics at Belmont…
This semester I interned at Hawthorne Elementary School in Ms. Ross’ fourth grade classroom. Each week I observed the class for two and a half hours and participated in helping instruct the math lesson. While at my math internship, I have learned tools to help me become an effective elementary mathematics teacher. In my opinion, this internship has been helpful but I believe it could have been even more beneficial. Compared to my internship in level one and science, interning at Hawthorne has been much less involved and hands on. Before starting this internship, I was very nervous because I have never taught fourth grade before. I was even more nervous because math has always been my weakest subject and I was very nervous to teach fourth grade math. This internship has…
My nephew was failing math in the second grade last year. He barely understood the lessons his teacher discussed in class. Shy as he was, he always hesitated to ask for help. His teacher would hand out class work for them to work on, but he barely got anything done. By the end of class, she would have home work assigned for them to do, but he rarely turned them in. His teacher and parents grew more concerned about him as the days past without any progress. I believed that I could help him, so I offered my assistance.…
