Why Students Cheat
There are many popular ways for students to cheat in exams. Some students take their notes into the examination rooms. Some students ask their friends the answers by whispering while taking the exams. And some students just try to copy the answers of students who sit in front of them without caring how similar the answers are. It is interesting to focus on the question that why some students still keep cheating in exams even though they know that the punishments of university are getting so tougher and tougher that every single semester many students have to drop their education.
There are three main reasons why some students cheat in exams; being afraid of failure, having no ability, and the pressure to get a good GPA for athletic qualification. Being afraid of failure is the most important reason for some students to cheat in exams. Some students think that if they fail the exams, they will have a lot of the following problems. For example, their parents will complain them about bad grades, their friends will look down and laugh at them, and they guess that the light of their educational futures will be darker too. They will get stressed if they cannot do the exams as well as they hope, so the acts of plagiarism is their only option if they choose not to study. However, some students are afraid that they will have many problems if they fail the exams, so they start to cheat. Having no ability to do exams is the next reason that causes some students cheating. There are a few cases for this reason. Some students deal with unfair professors such as overly harsh grading, unreasonable work load in course, and unfair test designed to fail students. Some students cannot do the exams because of procrastination. They put everything to the last minute which leaves no time to study and to review. And some students unreasonably judge themselves that they are not smart enough to pass the exams. Instead of studying hard, paying attention to classes,

Either, they don’t realise how smart they are, or maybe they are just scared of hard work and failure? In reality, the main reason why students cheat is because they: “didn’t think they could accomplish what they wanted to any other way”. But is the goal really accomplished, when it is accomplished with fraud? Plagiarism is so common that some people even write papers in ex-change for money. As it is told in the article: “Professor Donald Downs (…) met a man who “told me he felt like he had taken my courses.” A puzzled Downs asked the man what he meant. “He told me, ‘I’ve written about 20 papers for your…

Unintentional Plagiarism can be caused by hidden memory. Students may perceive it to be a new idea but in actual they unknowingly have clicked an idea saved at the back of their mind. For some students plagiarism “is no big deal”. Students do not see cheating as a major problem among their peers. For example, a study by Lim & Sec (2001) based in Singapore which they describe as “one of the most competitive educational system in the world found that students are morally ambivalent about academic cheating and are rather tolerant of dishonesty among their peers.”…

The most common reasons expressed by students for cheating are not understanding the material, unrealistic expectations set by administrators, and simply being lazy. It is no surprise that students with low grade point averages would cheat from time to time, but what is surprising is that students with exceptionally high GPAs cheat as well. Cheating is considered the easy way out of school work and an easy way into an exceptional grade. For many, school is boring, but the desire to socialize is not and the curriculum is usually what deters…

However, some people may question if certain types of cheating are okay and not dishonest and others dishonest. For example, some people may think copying a homework assignment is not a big deal and dishonest while other people think that cheating on exams is dishonest. In addition, some people may resort to cheating when they are not too aware of the material they are trying to learn when it comes to being tested and others do it for the good grade, not because they don’t know it. Also, many studies and surveys have been conducted at various school and I have noticed from the free responses that people are only attending school for the good grade and not to learn. Therefore, they need not these functions but they must go to library and read a lot of books to find the best material for their school work. Nowadays, we have internet and a lot of online databases where we can find a lot of material for our work. That is why cheating is more extended now then in the past. However, high school students usually do not consider copying some parts of someone work as cheating. Therefore, when they do it later at university, they are violating university rules and they can lose their academic integrity. Also students can be excluded from college for cheating. Other bad thing about cheating is that people cannot get rid of this bad habit. When student starts to cheat in the school, he does it usually also later in the work and it can have bad consequences. On the other hand, sometimes can happen that nobody find out that the student was cheating. This can help him to finish the college and find a well-paid job. In a student’s college life he/she will face many situations where he/she will be tested on ethical values. The most common unethical practice done by students is that they cheat in exams; they may do this by gaining illegal access to the questions before the actual exam, use of mobile phones during a written exam etc. Mostly outside pressures lead a student to cheat. Mark Clayton in his book, A whole lot of cheating going on, states “Students say time and workload pressure are major factors spurring academic dishonesty, followed by parental pressure.” Example: In Asian countries such as Sri Lanka, pressure from parents is at an all time high specially when it comes to education. Moreover most undergraduate students are involved in many different activities in addition to studies, these are their social lives, extra curricular activities, he/she may be working part time, just to name a few. Thus the time available to spend on studies is minimized and the student would definitely feel the pressure leading him/her to cheat in the exam for an easy pass. This will eventually become a habit and will affect the person negatively when he/she starts a job, they will keep trying to find quicker and illegal solutions to complete their work which would label them as an unethical person in their field of work. Santa Clara University, in their article ‘Top Ten Ethical Issues for College Freshmen’ gave another reason for students cheating, it is stated “how bad is it to copy the homework for a class you’ll never use in your professional life?” - See more at:…

First of all, I think students who cheat don’t belong in college, because they don’t have a good study attitude. I think a college student needs honesty to do the work, even if the work is difficult, because honesty is very important. When people are young, parents always tell us to be an honest person. Cheating is not an honest action. If students do work by themselves, it can show their own work, because when a student cheats, the work is not real; it’s someone else’s. Also, I think students need to be hard working during ordinary times, because if you do not study hard, of course, you don’t understand the test. Don’t depend on others. Depending on yourself is good for tests and life; you cannot depend on others even if the teacher doesn’t catch the cheating.…
