Why Odysseus Is Not A Hero In Homer's Odyssey
“The Oddessey” Hero Essay
A hero can be anyone or anything. A hero always puts others lives before their own. They keep moving despite danger. A hero never gives up. A hero will do things for the good of everyone even if it means turning against those they care about. A hero will help with all things big and small because everything matters. In the Odyssey the main character is Odysseus. This is his backstory. After Odysseus sacked the city of Troy he tried to sail home but was detained by the Gods for 10 years. He arrived to find his home under assault by men wanting his wife… He killed them all. Odysseus is not a hero because he did things only to help himself and he used people who trusted him with their lives to do so.
The first reason Odysseus is not a hero is because he did things for his own gain even though it hurt people that were innocent.

Odysseus is a great leader but he is also a villain. Donald Trump… well you can call him a cult leader, that uncanny way he gains everyone's trust. He wins over even those who were against him. But Donald is really naive. Odysseus killed the suitors he didn't care about their families or friends he just wanted his wife. Trump said he wants to deport all illegal immigrants he doesn't care about their lives he doesn't care about their friends he just wants money. Neither of those two are dumb. Donald is a businessman, he knows how to cheat people out of money. And to gain people's trust. Odysseus is a cunning warrior. He tricked the cyclops, tricked his crew and his fighting strength is something to marvel at. But alas these two they only lived for one thing...and they don't care who they hurt getting

Odysseus was no hero and his words and actions clearly show. Book 1 of the Odyssey starts with “Sing in the, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending”. Introducing Odysseus as “a man skilled in all ways of contending” shows Homer, author of the Odyssey clearly wanted Odysseus to be seen as a hero. After all, they were both Greek, and the Greeks held a lot of pride they needed to protect. This makes me believe that the story behind The Odyssey was twisted so that the reader was forced to see from the perspective the author wanted.…

When one thinks of a hero, one thinks of a good hearted person. Someone who saves lives and is righteous. An epic hero like Odysseus is not the two dimensional character found in Grimm’s Fairy Tales. He exhibits both traits of a hero and a villain. While clever and determined, Odysseus is unfaithful and selfish. Although revered in the past, Odysseus is not so glorious today.…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a hero because of how he got all the suitors out of the house. I believe that he is a hero for that because of the way that they just moved in and tried to marry his wife. Also that they were eating all of his animals fruit and other things also that they were drinking all of his wine. They were also mean to his servants and to son which made him mad at them. Then when he came they did not know and they were treating him like that he was nothing and that he should die. So that is the reason why he had to kill all of the suitors.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

However, the fact that Odysseus does have some flaws cannot be rejected. These flaws include the fact that he loses a lot his men (Book IX 59-61, IX 287-290, X 118-133, XII 243-246, XII 416-419) and the fact that he boasts about himself especially when he reveals his name after defeating the Cyclops (Book IX 500-504). Nevertheless, this does nothing but adds to the idea of Odysseus being more evidence of him being a hero. He is a mortal hero, a human, and humans have…

You may be asking yourself, how can he be a bad leader if he is the reason they won at Troy and got home? Well the answer is that it took them 10 years to get back to Ithaca. It took long because of Odysseus doing horrible things such as telling Polyphemus his name. Because of Odysseus’ doing this, its causes him and his men to be a target for the gods. Another example of this is when Odysseus receives a bag of wind from Aeolus and he does not communicate with his men and causing them to think that it is a bag of riches. So you can not blame them for being curious because after all it is in our nature as human…

Many people can identify heroes in their everyday life as well. Heroes can be someone that helps a person, for example many people consider their parents to be heroes because of the support they provide them in life. In the Odyssey, Odysseus has been portrayed as a war hero. His characteristics on the other hand, portray a villain. In Book 9, Odysseus stole Polyphemus’ sheep, as well as blinded him. Polyphemus was considered a villain when he held Odysseus captive, yet Odysseus was still a hero when he stole his sheep in the first place. This shows that heroes gained their glory by taking over other regions. Heroes sacked cities, heroes attacked the innocent, heroes fought for what they thought was right. The time period the Odyssey took place revolved around fighting. As a result, the heroes were then based on who ever sacked more cities, not an impact of the greater good. All in all, a hero is shaped through portrayal and the time period.…
