Why Marijuana should be legalized For people that don’t know what marijuana is? It is the dried leaves and flowering pots of the hemp plant that contain THC and is consumed for a number of different reasons. There are hundreds of different types of marijuana strains that range in effects and potency. There are many myths and facts about marijuana that people still do not know, and there is a very negative connotation that is seen toured people that take marijuana. Marijuana is the third most used recreational drug in America behind Alcohol and Tobacco. Marijuana is far less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Around 50,000 people die each year from alcohol poisoning. More than 400,000 deaths each year are attributed to smoking tobacco. Marijuana is a nontoxic drug that cannot case death and or overdose on it. So there are no reported deaths for Marijuana. There are a lot of unfounded rumors that say that smoking pot can cause lung cancer because you’re inhaling smoke, like cigarettes. This is simply not true. Cigarette smoke causes cancer because the tobacco is radiated where marijuana is not. In fact, the American Association for Cancer research has found that marijuana actually helps slow down the tumor that is growing in the lungs, breasts, and brain. The American Association for cancer did several studies’ to show that Marijuana can help slow down tumors. “Then, for three weeks, researchers injected standard doses of THC into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells, and found that tumors were reduced in size and weight by about 50 percent in treated animals compared to a control group. There was also about a 60 percent reduction in cancer lesions on the lungs in these mice as well as a significant reduction in protein markers associated with cancer progression, Preet says.” (American Association for Cancer Research, 2007, p. 3) Study after study has shown that Alcohol is

The usual form of ingesting marijuana is through smoking, which, as we all know is abhorrent to the lungs and the biggest cause for lung cancer worldwide. Again, it's not the fact that marijuana itself causes massive adverse health affects, but the fact that the problems it brings with it, the 'weed culture' will damage people and society…

While tobacco has a bad reputation for pumping the giant amount of nicotine in to lungs, marijuana is estimated to have 50% to 70% more cancer-causing substances than tobacco smoke (“Marijuana”, n.d). The effect is extremely amplified by the fact that many marijuana smokers inhale deeply than cigarette smokers. The main reason is they think that marijuana is just like the herbal plants, it does not harm after all. They do not know that smoking marijuana can increase the amount of time the lungs are working and exposes to cancer-causing chemicals. In addition, heart health is also affected by smoking marijuana. It increases the risk of several problems including heart palpitations, arrthythmias, and heart-attack. Smoking marijuana’s effects on the heart can make smoking marijuana a high-risk activity for not only seniors but also people suffering heart-disease conditions. According to the articles called “Medical Marijuana Legislation: What We Know and Don’t”, the authors mention specific statistic about people who abused the medical uses of marijuana. In 2010, 12.2 million United States citizens aged twelve and older reported past-year non-medical use of prescription OAS, a ten percent increase from 2002, making OAs the most abused drugs after marijuana, consequences of OAs abuse include…

Our government tries to satisfy the needs and wants of all 300 million U.S. citizens, but ends up making us more and more unhappy. Marijuana legalization has been a fight with the government for over twenty years. Many agree that it is harmful and should be done away with while others believe that it is a natural herb planted to help us cope with the stress of our hectic lives. I agree with those who are stressed. Currently I do not smoke marijuana, pot, but if it were to ever become legalized I would most definitely dabble in the tranquility occasionally. I believe that we have been fighting the war long enough to have marijuana legalized and that our government should give it a long shot! I have ten hard theories to as why legalizing marijuana would be a show stopping idea. Not only would it satisfy us, but it could satisfy many other important issues such as our economy.…

Thousands of people die every year from tobacco and smoking related illnesses, and hundreds of innocent people die every year in auto accidents caused by drunk drivers. It 's even possible to die from alcohol poisoning, but marijuana has never been directly attributed to any deaths. Despite all this, public opinion on marijuana is still based on myth and prejudice even though it remains relatively harmless. The harmful effects of marijuana have been exaggerated.…

I believe that marijuana should continue to remain illegal. I believe there are more benefits if marijuana is kept illegal than if it were to be legalized. I believe marijuana should remain illegal because it impacts health negatively, it can be addictive and it would negatively impact society. Although the article from John Cloud (2002) stated that Marijuana might actually be good for you, the fact is that the research isn’t available. I believe that marijuana should not be legalized until they can prove marijuana to be beneficial to society. We should not allow a substance to be freely used in society if we do not fully know the long term effects or implications the drug will have on users. If the government did legalize marijuana it would promote to the country that the government approves of using marijuana which would cause more people to use it. Too many people already abuse marijuana as it is and if it were legal there would be many more cases of marijuana abuse.…

Since the 1930s, marijuana has been illegal in the eyes of the U.S. government. Its classification is a Schedule I drug, which is said to have a high potential for abuse, no medical use, and not safe to use under medical supervision. In this day and age, it’s being prescribed to patients of severe health problems to treat their pains, nausea, etc. Compared to logical reasoning, the government takes a very different stance on marijuana. Some say prohibition serves no purpose, and others say it is a violation of our liberty to ban something harmless to others. As you can see, misconceptions on marijuana are plentiful and reformation is necessary.…

Marijuana has been used recreationally as well as medicinally for thousands of years. The earliest evidence of inhalation of marijuana, a small pile of charred cannabis/seeds, was found in Romania and believed to be dated prior to the 3rd millennia BCE. Marijuana use is considered to be beneficial to some, however has been controversially classified as a schedule 1 controlled substance, making it as illegal as heroin, politicians claim it to be more dangerous than cocaine, with little to no factual basis. Based upon my personal use of medical marijuana, I have seen more positive than negative effects, and believe it should be decriminalized so as to ease the pain, suffering, anxiety,…

Numerous studies have shown marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and to be an irritant to the lungs. In fact, marijuana smoke contains 50-70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. Marijuana users usually inhale more deeply and hold their breath longer than tobacco smokers do, which further increase the lungs' exposure to carcinogenic smoke. Marijuana smokers show dysregulated growth of epithelial cells in their lung tissue, which could lead to cancer;6 however, a recent case-controlled study found no positive associations between marijuana use and lung, upper respiratory, or upper digestive tract cancers.7Thus, the link between marijuana smoking and these cancers remains unsubstantiated at this time. Nonetheless, marijuana smokers can have many of the same respiratory problems as tobacco smokers, such as daily cough and phlegm production, more frequent acute chest illness, and a heightened risk of lung infections. A study of 450 individuals found that people who smoke marijuana frequently but do not smoke tobacco have more health problems and miss more days of work than nonsmokers.8 Many of the extra sick days among the marijuana smokers in the study were for respiratory illnesses.…

In perspective of anti-marijuana politicians, marijuana is dangerous, ethically wrong, and generally unnecessary. But compared to tobacco and alcohol deaths and injuries that occur annually, marijuana is one of the least consequential drugs out there. With alcohol killing 400,000 people every year. That’s a little over the population of Tucson. With Tobacco killing over 100,000 people every year. There have been no reported deaths leading directly to the use of marijuana.…
