Why Leprechaun Is One of the Greatest Horror Villains of All Time
I love horror movies.

When I watch them, I don’t need a plot.
I don’t need decent acting.
I don’t need quality cinematography.
I don’t need any of that.

What I want are cheap thrills,
Buckets of blood,
Scantily clad women,
And entertaining villains.

If you’re interested in reading further, I’m going to focus on that last part- entertaining villains.

I have personally arrived at a point in which I have come to believe that the most unique, complicated, and noteworthy horror villain is not

Freddy Krueger,
Nor Michael Myers,
Nor Jason Voorhees,
Nor Jaws,
Nor Norman Bates,
Nor the Devil…
No, none of these.

Ladies and gentlemen, as I see it… one of the greatest horror villains is Leprechaun.

Here are some quick facts to provide you with some background if you are unfamiliar with Leprechaun.

-Leprechaun is a horror character whom Mark Jones created in 1993.

-Leprechaun is played by dwarf actor, Warwick Davis.

-The Leprechaun franchise consists of six films: Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 3: Leprechaun in Vegas (1995), Leprechaun 4: Leprechaun in Space (1997), Leprechaun 5: Leprechaun in the Hood (2000), and Leprechaun 6: Leprechaun Back in Da Hood (2003).

-The plot of each film mainly revolves around foolish mortals finding and keeping the Leprechaun’s gold. When Leprechaun attempts to retrieve his gold, anyone who stands in his way ends up dying in either a crazily, inventive way (Leprechaun casting a spell that makes a victim throw himself into a spinning, razor-sharp fan which the victim believed was a beautiful nude woman)… or a ludicrously simple way (Leprechaun beating a man to death with a lead pipe).

-Each film effectively combines comedy and horror.

Ok, now back to the villain himself.

THESIS: Leprechaun is perhaps the most uniquely complicated horror villain ever to grace the silver screen, due to the fact that he is actually reasonable. Big emphasis on “reasonable.”

Reasonable is

Lastly, we are going to talk about what the story and movie have in common. Hannah does not want to go to the Seder and she ends up going anyways. They both have the same setting, same outcome, and the same theme. Hannah and her Aunt Eva have a very strong connection. She goes back to the 1940’s to understand what her Aunt Eva and the rest of her family (as Jews) went through during that time. They are taken to the camps and in the end, Hannah end up dying in the place of Rivka/her Aunt Eva.…

Sinister, although it is a person or thing trying to bring harm or misfortune, sinister may get a bad rap considering a man who has made his career being sinister. Tim Burton is a director of many children movies, but the movie he makes aren’t exactly your average children movies. Burton is the master of making your average nice children movies into the most sinister children movies ever. Burton directed moves like Edward Scissorhands, Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In a majority of these Burton films, Burton chooses to portray a common theme that embracing your unique attributes is the ultimate key to success.…

There are a number of horror movies that come out each year. It seems that movie goers are fascinated with the gore and brutality that comes with this genre. Each movie has its own individual plots, but there remains a “monster”, the character that inspires fear and brings suspense. The monster is what makes each movie unique. One of these is Michael Myers from the Halloween franchise. Michael Myers or better recognized as the man with the white mask, is the most misunderstood villain in my opinion. He was committed to a sanitarium as a kid for the murder of his older sister. After fifteen years, the villain escapes and starts his killing spree on, you guessed it, Halloween. What haunts me is not the fact that he is a killer, but that there is little to no background on what made him in to the monster he is.…

Another positive attribute of a villain is they will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals. This very similar to how I will approach my life goals in the future. I will do whatever it takes to become the person that I envision for myself. The goal is not the point; it is the drive to achieve that goal. Regardless of what I want to do in life, no matter how hard, I will do whatever it takes to get myself to where I want to be. I know that I have a strong drive to be the person I want to be, just like a…

All monsters have that one thing that sets them apart from the rest whether it’s the notorious big foot and his big foot, Michael Myers and his huge kitchen knife, or even werewolves and the fact that they transform when a full moon is out. Every monster is unique and different, but in the book Monsters there are seven theses and one thesis stood out. Theses number six in the book Monsters states that “Fear of the monster is really a kind of desire.” That thesis is true when it comes to a certain fictional monster by the name of Freddy Krueger.…

Many people perceive monsters as anything grotesque or not looking like the norm. In the book On Monsters, written by Asma, he mentions an array of monsters. He states, “One aspect of the monster concept seems to be the breakdown of intelligibility. An action or a person or a thing is monstrous when it can’t be processed by our rationality, and also when we cannot readily relate to the emotional range involved” (Asma 10). Because our perception is blinded by appearance, we fail to see the truth behind a monster –their actions. Although people define a monster by their appearance, it’s their actions that give them their identity.…

The horror movie The Evil Dead and it’s remake Evil Dead show how over time what we consider scary and bloody has changed. The Evil Dead is considered very tame by the horror movie standards of today, but back then in 1981 was considered adult enough to get an NC-17 rating, when in fact today it might get a PG-13. With that said, it’s still in my mind and the minds of others, one of the greatest cult films ever…

Since the dawn of time, horror has already been thriving on the Philippine mainstream (A. Paman, 2010). Men and women, old and young, alike, have been fond of being scared by the characters of the child-imitating tiyanak, the tree demon kapre, the vampire-like aswang, the horse-headed-human-bodied tikbalang, and the violent spirits, among others.…
