Why is Texting Bad?
Picture a bus, subway, or a party where everyone is on their phones. It looks dumb, right? No one is talking because everybody has their nose buried in their phones. According to techst.com, there are almost 16 million texts sent every minute due to the growth of texting in our society. Although texting is a valuable way to communicate, it takes the emotions out of a conversation. It also makes people feel insecure about having more than one thought and it alters our real life communication skills in a negative way.
First, texting takes the emotions out of a conversation unless they're extreme. The person texting has to either add emojis or type with all capital letters to show their emotions. As said by thoughtcatalog.com, “It’s hard to trust someone who claims to actually be laughing when they only type ‘lol’.” If you’d send ‘haha’ or ‘lol’ it would seem sarcastic or like you're not interested. Our society makes people who double text seem too excited, annoying, or pushy. According to thoughtcatalog.com, “Double texting implies that we are more excited to talk to someone then they are to talk to us, because we’re giving more to the conversation. No one wants to be perceived as more excited than the person they are texting with.
Furthermore, but not least, texting is ruining real life communication skills. Melissa Ortega, a child psychologist at New York’s Child Mind Institute, said, “The high school kids who I do see will be checking their phones constantly. They’ll use it as an avoidance strategy. They’ll see if they got a text message in the two minutes they were talking me.” According to huffingtonpost.com, most teens have trouble making small talk with a stranger, because they don’t have experience doing it.
