One thing in the 1950s was suburbia. People thought living in the suburbs was a good thing and it was. Their were less people in the suburbs so it was less crowded and easier to to do things. Also people want to leave the cities which was called the white flight. Also advertisements made the the suburbs look like the best place to live since it was quiet and calm. And homes didn’t cost alot of money so people could afford them in the suburbs. Also the suburbs had a big community with alot to do so it was like heaven on Earth so most people left the city and went to the suburbs. In The Sandlot it showed Lennie Smalls moving to a suburbia at the beginning. And it was a pretty big community. For example when Lennie and his friends went to the beach their were a whole lot of people their from the community. Also when Lennie and his friends went to the carnival it was a huge get together for people in the suburbia. And it made it look like a good and and wonderful place to live.…
Before we discuss why cities are cleaner than suburbs, we must first acknowledge how sprawl began and what made Americans fall in love with suburban lifestyle. According to Glaeser, it is largely due to public policies in the late twentieth century (193). Our government made a mistake by restricting developments in urban centers and encouraging new developments outside of cities. It caused the cost of living in cities to skyrocket, and people got pushed out to suburbs for cheaper housing (191). When there is a large supply of housing built in a particular region, its price of housing becomes affordable. People respond well to this elastic housing supply by moving to into such area to benefit from cheaper housing, and this is how American suburbanization began (190). The emergence of inexpensive automobiles accelerated suburbanization, since people were able to enjoy living in trees and…
Since the 1940’s, there has been a mass movement by Americans to live in the suburbs. They were searching for a sense of security, community, and open space that the city lacked. Suburbia was the answer to America’s discontent. It promoted the ideal community; with less crime and congestion. Suburbanites wanted to raise their families away from the cities in a wholesome, controlled, idealistic neighborhood. Suburbia became this romanticized idea.…
Some people believe it’s better to grow up in a small town. Other people think it’s better to grow up in a big city. My position on this would be growing up in a small town because you can go around and meet the people in that town and make sure you can trust them and not have to worry about people sneaking around trying to find something they can steal from you.…
The purpose of the documentary was to talk about the issues and opportunities that are affecting the individuals who live in suburban cities throughout the United States of America. They filmed this documentary in a wide range of suburban locations from Chicago Illinois, Long Island New York, Minneapolis Minnesota, Denver Colorado, Orange County California, and Cleveland Ohio. All of these locations have very different cultures surrounding the suburban cities but at the same time they all face the same challenges like public transportation, water sanitation, and segregation of the suburban communities. The main message that the director wants to get across to the audience is how suburban areas…
Throughout the course of time, the contraction of Levittown reshaped the land of suburbia. Before Levittown even existed, people have been appealed to the characters of living beyond the noise, pollution, overcrowding and disease of the city, while still close enough to enjoy the benefits of its industrial and cultural vitality. After World War II, suburbia conjures visions of traditional family life, idyllic domesticity and stability. In 1947, as more houses within this planned community of Levittown were built, the less room people had. Through various changes to the American’s ideal style house, Levittown changed the landscape of suburbia to occupy more people.…
By 1920, over fifty-four million American’s were living in cities. This changed, however, after the Second World War. Suburbanization took the place of urbanization and Americans were fleeting to the suburbs. By 1960, American suburbs held more of the population than cities, small towns, and the countryside…
Suburbia continues to be vital in representing American living standards today. Throughout the 1930s, and 40s, the common young American man was either striving to protect his family during the economic tornado of the Great Depression, or was fighting for his country at war. During this period in America, the middle class was largely comprised of industrial workers, and unemployed men that were low on America’s economic food chain. Middle class living standards usually were in crammed apartments in the city, and wages were so low that many Americans struggled to survive the harship brought on by the Great Depression. However, thanks to a booming post-war wartime economy, the American worker was able to afford housing, cars, and other appliances…
Suburban. Boring. These words are what seem to echo from an outsider's mouth as they travel by my community. But in my eyes, I see much more. I see multiple families communicating on a day-to-day basis in order to provide a helping hand to one another. I see children, teens, and adults all intertwine in what is known as our town center. I see years of damage on tarnished buildings that symbolize the efforts of multiple people to create a beautiful community for others to live in. Most importantly, I see different families of different races and authentic cultures coming together in a single community. And every single one of them have a unique skill to offer.…
Living in the suburbs: is it better than living in the city if you have a family? Why would one want to live so far away from everything? Questions like these are going through the minds off millions of people around the world as suburbanization is becoming increasingly popular. But first what is suburbanization? To put it simply, it is the process of citizens migrating from the city to the suburbs (Filion and Bunting, 2015, p. 446). This has been happening largely since the mid-20th century, aligning with the popularity and easy accessibility of the automobile (Filion and Bunting, 2015, p. 28 - 29). In our modern society, the main factors that draw people away from the city and towards the suburbs is that suburban areas have less crime, are…
The first concept of social life in the 1950’s is suburbia. There was a great migration of people from the cities to the suburbs during the ‘50s. There were many reasons people thought that living in the suburbs was better than the frantic life style of the city. One of them was that it had become easier to travel to and from places with invention and advancement of the automobile. One of the other larger reasons was because of the increasing racial and immigration tensions in the city, many white people who wanted to escape it moved to the suburbs. This was known as the White Flight. The suburbs were also seen as a great place to raise a family since it was calm and peaceful. Since the homes were cheap and east to get, it seemed like a miracle for people needing a house because of the postwar housing situation, which made it hard to find homes anywhere. Ads on TV showed the suburbs as being a kind of paradise. In the movie “The Sandlot”, Smalls had just recently moved to the suburbs. In the movie, it depicts the suburbs as a family friendly place to live with fun activities and events. There was a block party on the 4th of July accompanied by fireworks. And the community pool that everyone could go to in the summer for a fun time. “The Sandlot” and the actual 1950’s suburbia seem to fit with each other perfectly.…
Craig Ustler, UF alumni and owner of Ustler Development, Inc., lecture is about the benefits of urbanism and how take is that the “American Dream” has changed. He believes that people no longer want the “Leave It to Beaver” or “Brady Bunch” lifestyle of living in the suburbs, rather, people now want the type of lifestyle of sitcoms such as Seinfeld, Friends, and Sex in the City, or those showing city life. The market is now demanding commercially, socially, and financially sustainable communities. Communities need to be mulit-purpose and centrally located, prompting people to move away from suburbs and move towards urban planned communities. Urban communities, once considered crime ridden, are now hip and are…

What are rural values. cities and metropolises were rare up until five hundred years ago. Neighbors are also a big part of country life. One might feel comfortable that he knows and is well known by his neighbors maybe as a sense of protection. Honesty is also another stereotypical trait portrayed by rural people, possibly due to fewer obstacles and variables city people have to deal with. Rural people might appear to be friendlier than city people, most likely because of less contact with people than crowded urban areas. Openness is another trait shared by rural people probably due to sense of security that low population density and less people means less rumors, less embarrassment, and more trust. Generally people might seem more helpful in emergency situations in the country, probably due to far away hospitals and immediate sense of urgency. In the country you will also tend to find unlocked homes way more frequent than city homes. What are urban values? When living in the city, life is mostly in fast pace mode where transportation, convenience and industry all play a major role. People may seem more competitive between business or maybe even sports which carries over in to making money in which businesses compete against each other. Diversity is another key element in the city life for many ethnicities and races. Convenience is great in the city, because pretty much anything is reasonably attainable ranging from supermarkets and malls to gas stations and restaurants. City dwellers may be more private about themselves due to vast numbers of people who truly don't care. People in the city are always subject to change, whether it is a new restaurant in town or a new work place because it is closer to the house. Cites have been made possible by transportation systems, which include railroads that import and export supplies within the city to keep a constant flow of goods. Tens of thousands of people use subways to get to and from work, subways have been a major…
