Why Is It Important To Pursue A Career In Acting?
As I still thoroughly enjoy my "twitter treasure hunts," where I discover actors, filmmakers, and the like, once in awhile, I uncover someone who doesn't fit into the neat little box that the world of entertainment attempts to construct for him. In the case of Stephen Jared, that is entirely true. While he is an actor, he is not your typical actor. And while he is a writer, I doubt one would label him as "mainstream" or "run-of-the-mill." Thus, if you follow my blog, you are well-acquaitned with the fact that these are the very kinds of people I take immense delight in featuring. Recently, Stephen agreed to answer a few questions about his career and the myriad of experiences he has had in both acting and writing.

It was also unique in that for the first time they were targeting films, after Star Wars in 1977, toward twelve-, thirteen-, and fourteen-year-olds. I don't know how anyone who was growing up then didn't dream of a career in Hollywood. I wasn't sophisticated enough then to watch a movie and think about becoming an art director or a prop guy. Watching Indiana Jones had me wishing to become Harrison Ford. As I grew further into my teens, I developed an interest in all of it, but still held onto the idea of being an actor. As far as training goes, I moved from Cincinnati to Los Angeles at twenty-one years old and got into an acting class and stayed for five

When you think about what you want for your future is there someone you look up to for inspiration? For me this person is Lin Manuel Miranda. Lin is a triple threat; playwright, singer, and actor which are all things I aspire to be. He proved that no matter where you’re from, if you work your hardest you can achieve great things. From a young age Lin’s parents encouraged him to start piano and theatre, which eventually lead to his starts on Broadway and Disney.…

He used to take me to films. I was always very interested in stuff like that, but because of the part of town I was from, a career in acting wasn't even an option. I remember talking to my mother one day and said, "I think I want to become an actor." And she said, "You can't become an actor. You don't look like Paul Newman." (laughs) I thank God every day that I don't look like Paul Newman. The good thing about being a character actor is that there's always some spectacled, balding guy somewhere needed for a show, and the characters are always interesting. And you don't have anybody going through your garbage at night. (laughs) I'm always meeting people who think they know me, right? "I know you from somewhere." And I start to say, "Well, I'm from this show--" And they say, "No, no, no, not that!" (laughs) It's funny and it's great when that happens. You know your work is getting out there to the people. So I just started doing it--I never really had any training or anything. Because I've always looked older, they could hire me and not have to hire the young guys and put shoe polish in their hair or anything. So I started with plays. And then the first film I did--I came to Vancouver--it was called Brotherly Love. I was playing a string of doctors, as I looked a doctor. Nothing but doctors. It was a lot easier back then because mostly the camera was on the other person and you were doing all the exposition. It's been a fun career so far. I'm…

I am inspired by those that act because the actors are challenging themselves and playing a role that they had most likely never played before. As the audience, I am absorbed into the characters’ world and how the little mannerisms of each character complete the play as a whole. I am an absolute fanatic for theatrical performances, whether it be a play, musical, or dance. I think that performers have to express themselves effortlessly, unbeknownst to the audience. By experiencing it firsthand through pit orchestra, I was fully able to appreciate how much time was put into the preparation of of a performance. As a student at Wellesley, I will be frequenting the musicals and plays performed by the theater because the fine arts is what fuels my imagination. Also through participating in pit, I learned that many, many hours are put into creating a fantastic, emotion-wrought performance. It is not just the actors that create the atmosphere, it is also the musicians. Along with the actors and possibly the music, there are more people that put the time into making the play “perfect”, something that the audience usually does not know or does not see. For this reason, I am very excited to learn that there is a theater (aka a place to watch plays/musicals/perform as a pit member) because whether I…

Throughout my school life I have taken part in many different performances that were put on show to the public. I acted in numerous short films with the A level film study classes and studied drama at and A level. One of my earliest works was acting in my primary school productions of Wizard of Oz and Cinderella; and in secondary I was in the school production of Charlie and the chocolate factory. As I got older I discovered acting in films as opposed to stage productions. I thoroughly enjoy both sides of acting; stage and films. During my time at Chestnut Grove 6th form I was asked to act in numerous short films created by the A level film studies class as my talent had been widely recognised throughout the 6th form. A short film I was acting in called ‘Double Crossed’ as a gang leader; was then used for two students A level course work in film studies.
