Why Is It Important To Prevent Contraband?
Contraband can be defined as many different things. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, contraband is defined as anything prohibited by law from being imported or exported. Each day contraband is brought into the prison system. Contraband may put the safety of correctional officers at risk. With the advance technology in today’s society, production of devices to help detect contraband had to be invented. There are many preventive methods on improving the safety and security for the correctional officer.
Cell phone can cause a major security and safety issue for correctional officer. Cell phones can cause distractions for the correctional officer. If not properly supervising the inmates, the correction officer is jeopardizing the safety of other correctional officers and inmates. Cell phones carry an abundant amount of important, personal information. If an inmate was to obtain the cell phone all of the correctional officers personal information would be accessable to the inmate. The cell phone gives the inmate access to the outside world. The lost cell phone may have belonged to the correctional officer that just wrote up that inmate. That inmate just called a hit on the correctional officer on him when he gets off. That correctional officers life may be endangered all from losing a cell phone, which was never suppose to be in the facility to …show more content…
Dealing with gangs, an Correctional Officer would have to pay extra close attention to his or her surrounding. Gang members sometimes may send notes (kites) to other members of gangs letting them know who to hurt next or some other illegal activity. While in jail, gang members get their gang symbol tattoo on themselves. All these things have to be watched for. When paying close attention you can sometimes catch things before they happen, find new gang members, or solve cases that have happened while in jail that were gang
