Why Is High School Too Long
Some people believe that school days are too short, however, school days are actually too long. An average high school day in America lasts six and a half hours; that is approximately 1,170 hours a year for schools that have 180 days a year (Nisen, para. 3). Although the average school day is six and a half hours, many high schools’ days are longer. For example, students at Eastern View High School go to school for seven hours and fifteen minutes each day, which is 1,305 hours of education per year (Eastern View High). This is too long of a day for adolescents to be forced to spend at school. High school school days are too long for students because teens are left with little time for homework, other activities outside of school, and do not get enough sleep. One effect of long school days is students are left with a small amount of time to complete homework. High school students have loads of homework every night and struggle to complete it in a timely manner. Most teachers assign three and a half …show more content…

For instance, most students who participate in sports perform academically better than those who are not (High School Sports, para.

By doing so, students would be more alert and wanting to learn, and they can become successful. An issue that comes along with changing the high school hours are the diverse amounts of after school activities. With ending school later, these activities would have to end later also. A teenager's natural sleep clock wants to go to bed later anyway, so it would not affect that teenager if he or she gets home late. For intense, a teenager who plays volleyball is used to getting out of practice at 5:30 p.m., instead she would get out at 7:30 p.m.. She would still have time to go home and do homework and other things and would not have to worry about going to bed or waking up early because of her natural sleep clock. With this not being an issue, high schools need to change their hours to being later. Many students would be positively changed mentally and physically if schools adapted to their natural sleep clocks. Students would be a lot more energized and ready to take on the day. In conclusion, there are a variety of benefits for teenagers that come with high school classes…

Delaying high school schedule, even if only by an hour or just a half hour, would be beneficial to the sleep needs of teenagers. "Studies have show that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep (about nine and half-hours) but get less sleep (about seven and half-hours)" (Silver). After puberty, teens' shift into a delayed phase. Circadian rhythms (sleep patterns) all start and end later in the day than when they had prior puberty (Silver). Nearly 65% of children say they participate in sports to be with their friends (Statistic Brain). Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing. For example, the age that a child joins a basketball team has shifted from fourth grade to first grade or even kindergarten in the past decade. School is the primary factor when you review the participation in athletics,…

One reason high school sports aren’t beneficial is because they create a lot of pressure. According to the video “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” by KCRA, sports are sometimes the only way students can get into a good college and be able afford it. This puts a lot of pressure on the athletes to perform at their best 100% of the time. Experts say that your child's entire team will suffer if the parents are pressuring their kids (KCRA.com, “Do Athletes Face Unnecessary Parent Pressure?” ). This fact is important because it proves, when parents put pressure on their children it does not benefit them, in fact it is actually setting them up for life in an unhealthy way. This shows that the pressure from sports is not good and not worth it.…

Beep! We all dread that early morning alarm that goes off to tell us it’s time to get ready for school. We wish we could just go back to sleep and carry on with our day later, but we know that time won’t wait for us. Most schools start earlier in the morning, sometime in between seven or eight o’clock. Some people think that this is too early and that school needs to start later, whereas some feel that it is fine at the time it now starts.…

High School sports have always been questioned because of all the health risks that they bring to those who participate in them. As of now High School sports are still a major part of High School and large amount of students do them. However, many claim the pros outweigh the cons, meaning that people shouldn’t be so concerned about what “could” happen. Not only do sports keep the students healthy and active, they bring a social aspect that can’t be found anywhere else, and the odds of being injured aren’t high and can happen to anyone.…

Many people do not realize the importance of high school sports; let me tell a story. There were two completely different kids that went to the same high school. One of them participated in high school sports from Fall to Spring. This kid kept up with his grades and kept busy with sports and homework. The other kid did not participate in any kind of school sports. The kid who didn’t play any sports went home after school every day, so instead of playing sports or doing homework in the free time available, he had to find something else to keep busy. Having all this free time led trouble. There is no need to go into more depth in the story; the point is that people do not realize that high school sports are a crucial part of being a good student…
