Why Is Cardiovascular System Important
The cardiovascular system plays a very important role in keeping the body alive. It is responsible for transportation of blood around the body. Blood carries many important things such as oxygen and nutrients to various organs allowing them to function properly. Blood also carries waste such as carbon dioxide to the lungs for gas exchange and metabolic waste to the kidneys for filtration and excretion. The cardiovascular system comprises of three different parts these being the heart, blood and blood vessels.

To understand what a blood pressure reading means a basic knowledge of the cardiovascular system is needed. The heart is one of the bodies’ most vital organs, without it the body would not receive oxygen and could not survive. The heart is comprised of 4 chambers, a left and right atrium and left and right ventricle. The deoxygenated blood enters the heart via a vein into the right atrium where it moves into the right ventricle before being transported to lungs via the pulmonary artery for oxygenation before returning to the heart into the left atrium. Of course maintaining a perfect blood pressure of 120/80 is impossible with these fluctuations but keeping it somewhat healthy is vital. Hypertension can occur due to a number of different factors including age, lack of physical activity, alcohol, caffeine, smoking and stress, these are all over a long period of time. Fluctuations however are short term changes in blood pressure and can be observed when taking measurements after eating a big meal, having a full bladder, after caffeine and alcohol, after exercise, smoking and even not having the correct posture during the measurement.     Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. Blood pressure is a measurement of the force against the walls of your arteries as your heart pumps blood through your body. Blood pressure readings are usually given as two numbers -- for example, 120 over 80 (written as 120/80 mmHg). One or both of these numbers can be too high. The top number is called the systolic blood pressure, which is the force of blood in the arteries as the heart beats, and the bottom number is called the diastolic blood pressure which is the force of blood in the arteries as the heart relaxes between beats. When you blood pressure is a normal it’s lower than 120/80 mmHg most of the time. High blood pressure (hypertension) which is what you have is when the reading is at least 140/90 or higher. One negative feedback system that helps regulate in blood pressure with negative feedback system( homeostatic imbalance) is when the heart beats faster or harder, blood pressure increases. If a stimulus causes blood pressure to rise the following sequence of events occurs. Baroreceptors (the receptors) pressure-sensitive nerve cells located in the walls of certain blood vessel, detect the higher pressure. The baroreceptors send nerve impulses (input) to the brain (control center). The brain nerve impulses (output) to the heart and blood vessels (the effectors). Heart rate decreases and blood vessels dilate (widen), which cause blood pressure to decrease (response). The organ systems involved are the heart which creates one force as it pumps blood into the arteries and through the circulatory system. The other force comes from the arteries resisting the blood flow. High blood pressure, if left untreated, can cause severe damage to the body 's organs, including the brain, heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. Risk factors for hypertension include: increasing age, male, race (African Americans, Hispanics), diabetes, family history, high sodium diet, obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol, and tobacco use.
