Why Is Abigail Williams Crazy
All is fair in love and war" Abigail Williams a girl of 17, from The Crucible sure did put a new spin to this saying. She believed that her love for John Proctor, a married man, was true love and so did a great many atrocities for that so called "love" even though in truth it was just a affair. This girl is the main villain of this story and thus is characterized as such : crazy, obsessed, and truly a manipulative girl. "Why is she crazy?"you might ask. Abbie was single handedly a 17 year old girl that was the cause of many deaths in this witch hunting story set in Salem. She was a girl that wanted her way and so foolishly thought that by taking down her competition and being label the true and good girl she could. And in a way, this girl was truly right once everyone thought she was good and pure she held the power in the town by threating the girls and threatening a weary and good man John Proctor. She even at a meeting to get back at her ex affair with John Proctor stabbed herself while watching Elizabeth's servant ,Mary, sow a poppet for her mistress then accused Elizabeth of witch craft. The quote is so true when you compare it with what Abigail did in Salem, how she manipulated her own uncle and the towns folk into believing her every single word, how she saved her self by incriminating others just to settle petty squabbles and settling old scores. An example, is in the beginning when their pastor caught them, the girls dancing in the woods with the African American servant ,Tituba, she blamed everything on Tituba saying that the woman was using magic and caused her to drink

    Manipulation is a constant theme of the play, it is the protagonist of the hysteria in Salem and is used as weapon by Abigail to gain herself power and authority. At the beginning of the play manipulation is used by Abigail and the girls to get themselves out of trouble but as the play progresses so dose manipulation and hysteria. Manipulation is no longer used to get the girls out of trouble, it is being used to accuse people of witchcraft and sentence people to their deaths.     Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams can be compared and contrasted when focusing of elements of love displayed for John Proctor. Elizabeth Proctor was very faithful to her husband. She loved him and stood by him through everything. When she had to tell the court about her husband, Elizabeth said, “My husband is a good and righteous man. He is never drunk as some are, nor wastin’ his time at the shovelboard, but always his work” (Miller 113, IV). Elizabeth always demonstrates her love for her husband by standing up for him even though he cheated on her with Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams is madly in love with John Proctor, but he never completely expresses the same feelings for her. Abigail Williams says to John Proctor, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart!     Life in Salem was very restrictive for any one, any variations of having fun were a sign of the devils work, like dancing. So the villagers were very serious in all matters. For example if verbal threats or curses came true, it was seen as the devils influence. They also had a wearied way of judging people. If somebody confessed to seeing the devil and wanted to be blessed by God, then they would not be punished. However, if they didn't see him or had any influence, then they were considered a devil worshiper. It was therefore better in those days to say that you were in the devils influence, and wanted to be blessed than saying that you were not. There are a number of characters to which some degree of blame could be attributed. One of these characters is Abigail. Abigail is the character who really gets the whole thing started e.g the leader of the group/ girls she also kept them in line by (in knower day term) black mail by that they had don the dance together and they were as much to blame as she was even though she is the one that took it to the next level by drinking the animals blood. She first openly admits to dancing in the woods to her uncle and when the pressure is put on her she says that it was to be blame on witchcraft.
