Why I Want To Pursue A Personal Statement Program
My family and I immigrated to the United States from Peru when I was four years old. Moving to the United States meant a better chance of achieving what people from underprivileged countries usually seek: education and a stable environment. My entire family, except for my aunt, lives in Peru and it is unfortunate that we live far from family that many people turn to as their support system. When I hear about the struggle of my family in Peru I am motivated to educate myself. Applying to college was difficult because I was a first generation student with the added struggle of applying as an undocumented student. This is why during my time at UCLA I have wanted to take advantage of all the opportunities that can help me achieve my career goals. Over the summer I had the ability to participate in the program called the Biomedical Science Enrichment Program (BISEP). Pursuing a PhD in life science research would give me the tools that I need to conduct research on my own that I would not be able to have with solely a Bachelor’s degree. I have a particular interest in the environment and the preservations of ecosystems. Considering the current political prevalence of the denial of global warming, life scientists are important now more than ever. I would like to be one of these scientists shaping and preserving the Earth for a future generation. I would love to travel around the world collecting samples, conducting research and discovering new information that could perhaps change the public’s mindset on this finite planet to take action. When we are able to adequately understand the needs of the planet humans will be better off with healthier environments and renewable resources that can inspire generations to look forward to a bright
