When I first moved in, I was extremely nervous. I did not know what it would be like to live by myself. I did not know if I would meet people or really anything. When my parents first left, I met my RA and then a bunch of the other RAs just through conversations in the dining hall. They were all so helpful, telling me the ins and outs of both Newman and also the University. Between what classes to take and what groups to join at Newman, they taught me everything. But most importantly, they let me know that I belonged here and made me feel welcome. I know what it is like first coming to college, since I just lived it, and I want to be able to help next year’s freshman with that transition like the RAs this year did.

More importantly, on a personal level, being an RA will help me be a better overall person and get to know more people. Being an RA would give me so many more chances to help other people through making people feel included and welcome, giving advice and helping with problems, and just being there to make people feel better. Newman has already helped my faith life, and I think that being there to help others in all those ways would make me a better person as well. An RA is responsible for making sure everyone feels welcome both in the hall and in church, since everyone is welcome in God’s eyes. Another part of building that community is having the RAs be a resource for people who are struggling. We can’t all be great Catholics all the time, but when we struggle it is helpful to have a resource to help us out. It is important as an RA to be there for others, so that if they are struggling with their faith, they can be there for them. Finally, an RA can also do things to promote the faith, including faith based activities, like prayer groups, or just getting their floor to go to mass together. Practicing the faith together improves everyone’s faith life and an RA can really help with
