There are several reasons why EBay failed trying to enter and get a foothold into the Asian Markets. American companies as a whole have had difficulties trying to get into the Asian Global market beginning in the year 2000. The biggest reason is our cultural differences. EBay was an outsider and did not understand the cultural market there. By understanding our cultural differences we will understand why EBay was unable to successfully enter the Asian market.
The main concept is a word, Guānxi . Guānxi describes the basic dynamic in personalized networks of influence, and is a central concept in Chinese society. At its most basic, Guānxi describes a personal connection between two people in which one is able to prevail upon another to perform a favor or service, or be prevailed upon. (Ansfield, 20047) Chinese companies are winning because they understand the market better and the power of Guānxi. A foreign company will never have the Guānxi of a Chinese one. Period.
Guānxi also goes hand in hand with corruption. China is the most corrupt place (next to Africa) in the world. Ebay just does not know how to use Guānxi or bribe the correct officials to get into the game. No other place in the world can you observe Government officials driving around with their mistresses in expensive cars next to peasant farmers pulling donkey carts on the 4th ring road of Beijing. If you want to get into anything in China, pay out enough bribes to officials to get the market share you need to lead. It’s very short term, but it may give you the advantage
The internet in Asia is basically controlled by two companies, Alibaba, and Tom Online. EBay went into the venture trying to do the normal American thing of dominating and taking over. There are several ways to get into an

    ebay failure in china

First, eBay failed to recognize that the Chinese market and the business environment are very different from that of the West. EBay sent a German manager to lead the China operation and brought in a chief technology officer from the United States. Neither one spoke Chinese or understood the local market. It was eBay’s biggest mistake. Second, because the top management team didn’t understand the local market, they spent a lot of money doing the wrong things, such as advertising on the Internet in a country where small businesses didn’t use the Internet. The fact that eBay had a strong brand in the United States didn’t mean it would be a strong brand in China. Third, rather than adapt products and services to local customers, eBay stuck to its “global platform,” which again did not fit local customers’ tastes and preferences.…

The relationship between people is the most complicated thing in the world, the relationship between the Chinese are more subtle. Chinese people believes that “在家靠父母,出外靠朋友” saying that at home one relies on one's parents and outside on one's friends. One thing that is really famous and special in China is how “relationship” works different from other countries and for foreigners to understand China’s culture and custom better; this is a necessary topic to cover. In order to facilitate the study of Chinese type of “relationship”, foreigners even create the world “guanxi”. Wikipedia describes guanxi as “the basic dynamic in personalized networks of influence, and is a central idea in Chinese society. In Western media, the pinyin romanization of this Chinese word is becoming more widely used instead of the two common translations—"connections" and "relationships"—as neither of those terms sufficiently reflects the wide cultural implications that guanxi describes.” In the west, people commonly handle their business first and if the business is successful, a relationship will be built. However, in China people believe that prospective business partners should build a relationship first and if it is…
